SAUER, SR., 83, LONG-TIME RESIDENT, DIES Mrs. Phillip Sauer, Sr., 83, long-time resident of Fairfield, passed away at her home, 700 West Burlington Sr., at 5:45 p.m. last night after several days serious illness. She had been in ill health for the past several years. Funeral services will be held at the Hoskins funeral home Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in charge of Dr. E. A. Piper. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Albertine (sic) Sauer, born Nov. 11, 1860 in Germany, came to this country when a small child. She came to Fairfield with her parents when she was five years old and has resided in this community since. Before her marriage to Phillip Sauer,she was Albertine Proband. Her husband, Phillip Sauer, now retired, is the oldest merchant still living in Fairfield. He and his wife operated the Sauer's Restaurant and Bakery on the north side of the square, moving in later years to its present location. The children still operate the bakery and restaurant. Besides her husband, Mrs. Sauer is survived by seven children. They are Mrs. J. E. Smith, Ottumwa; Phillip Jr., Dorathea (sic), Albert, Mrs. James Welday and Daniel, all of Fairfield, and Mrs. George G. Barker, Cambridge, Mass., as well as eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. On May 7, 1944, Mr. and Mrs. Sauer would have been married 60 years. Mrs. Barker will be unable to attend her mother's funeral. Word received here stated that as she was getting ready to leave for Fairfield, her small daughter fell and broke her arm. ------------- Daughter of Albert and Dorothea Proband.
