Daily Ledger Wednesday August 31, 1949 Pg. 8 Col. 6 DEATH CLAIMS PHILLIP SAUER PIONEER BAKER Phillip Sauer, pioneer Fairfield baker, passed away at his home at 700 W. Burlington street early this morning. He was 85. In failing health for some time, Mr. Sauer had been seriously ill for the past week. He had made his home in Fairfield for 68 years and was one of the city's best-known early businessmen. Prior to his retirement in 1932, he served the community both as a baker and restaurant man for 49 years. Mr. Sauer was born Dec. 24, 1863 in Weisenhelm-am-Berg, Germany, the son of Phillip and Charlotte Small Sauer. He became a baker's apprentice at the age of 13 and immigrated to the United States at 17. After working briefly in Bloomfield, Mr. Sauer was employed by the Philip Lang bakery in Fairfield. In 1883 he set up his own bakery on the north side of the square, moving his business to 109 N. Court street in 1905. At the peak of his business Mr. Sauer baked and sold over 2,000 loaves of bread a day in Fairfield. He was married May 7, 1885 to Albertina Proband (sic). She preceded hi in death in 1944. Mr. Sauer was a member of the local Lutheran church and the Knights of Pythias lodge. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. J. E. Smith, Ottumwa; Phillip F. of Woodward; Dorothy (sic), Albert, Mrs. James Welday and Daniel, all of Fairfield, and Mrs. Gardiner Barker, Cambridge, Mass. Eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. The body is at the Hoskins funeral home where funeral arrangements are pending. ----------------- Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Thursday Sept. 1, 1949 Pg. 8 Col. 3 Phillip Sauer Rites Will Be Held Friday Funeral services for Phillip Sauer, pioneer Fairfield businessman, will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Hoskins funeral home. Mr. Sauer passed away yesterday at his home. He had served the community as baker and restaurant owner for almost 50 years prior to his retirement in 1932. Dr. E. A. Piper will be in charge of the services. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The Knights of Pythias lodge will conduct services at the grave.
