Description	:	Alexander Worth was born the son of Barzillai and Mary (Pinkham) Worth. Barzillai died in New York and is buried there. Alexander first married on August 9, 1826 to Adaline Vermilya. In 1826, Mooresville was still in its early stage of development. Samuel Moore, the founder of Mooresville, needed business people like Alexander Worth to help make his new town prosperous. Alexander Worth came to town and rather quickly started the second store, Alexander Worth and Company, in the town of Mooresville. He opened it with a stock value of $4,000. In 1830, he formed a partnership with J. S. Kelly called Worth and Kelly and expanded his interests into the pork-packing business and land development. While Alexander Worth was helping make the town of Mooresville grow financially, he and wife, Adaline, were also adding to its citizens. Over the period of 16 years, the first Mrs. Worth had nine children. Of these, only four names are listed in the 1850 census records of Alexander's family: Lawrence, Julia, Sarah and Catherine. Other records show daughters named Mary, Maria & Elizabeth. On December 31, 1842, Adaline died in Brownstown, Jackson County, Indiana. With businesses to run and children for whom to care, Alexander had his hands full. He wooed the young Miss Harriet Alsie Glasscock and on July 6, 1843, she became the 2nd Mrs. Alexander Worth. Alexander and Harriet had nine children of their own: Alexander, Alice C., Alfred, Deborah E., Edward, Fannie, Harriet Isabella, William Carvosso and one other. Besides his business interests, Alexander Worth was involved in his community. He was a trustee of the first Mooresville School Society which was formed in 1828. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1830, he was elected as a candidate of the Whig party to the Indiana House of Representatives. He represented both Morgan and Hendricks County. On November 11, 1834, he was elected to the board of directors of the first State Bank of Indiana. About 1854, he moved his family to Indianapolis where he became Secretary of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad. He retained that position for 18 years during which he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio living there from about 1863 to 1869. In July of 1869, he returned to Mooresville, Indiana. He worked at forming a bank which opened in August 1872 with the name Savings Bank of Mooresville. He was its first Secretary and Cashier. The Savings Bank became the Farmers Bank and that is where he was still working as Cashier the time of his death. His obituaries say he was the father of 21 children, but no explanation is ever given for the three who would be in addition to Adaline's nine and Harriet's nine. Alexander Worth was important to the young town of Mooresville, Indiana and should be remembered for his many contributions to its development. He was a pioneer in every sense of the word. One obituary said, "In his death Mooresville loses one to whom they had shown the highest confidence by giving him the most trusty position they were capable of disposing." Bio by: J.Sullivan
