However, no Jefferson county birth record was entered. According to most accounts, his parents moved to Jefferson county from Pella in early 1906. It is possible that they were visiting this area in early 1901 and Alfred/Fred was born here but not recorded since they were not residents. Ia. - Funeral services for Fred Maasdam, 62, will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Methodist church in Ottumwa. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Fairfield (sic. in the same Maasdam family plat as where his parents are buried). Maasdam, one of Iowa's best known high school basketball coaches, died suddenly Thursday after suffering a heart attack at Bloomfield where he was having his car serviced. Maasdam's teams compiled a 192-63 record at the Ottumwa high school. His 1949 club won the state high school championship. He retired from coaching in 1958 and since has been a physical education instructor at Ottumwa high school. Maasdam was born in Fairfield (sic. no birth record found, however, to support this statement), the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Maasdam. He graduated from Parsons college in 1926 where he was an outstanding athlete. He coached at Richland, Washington and Packwood before going to Ottumwa in 1941. Maasdam is survived by his wife* and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Zesiger, of Ottumwa. A sister, Mrs. Ralph Kann, Fairfield, also survives. * the wife was Adah L. Rowse Maasdam.
