Maasdam of Holland and Marie Hagans of Pella, Iowa. Most accounts about Jacob refer to him using only the middle initial "G". There are at least three versions known as to the meaning of that middle initial: "Gesset", "Gerrit", and "Gradus". The "Gesset" version comes from the death record and evidently supplied, in part, by his daughter Marie. The "Gerrit" version comes from the full obituary published in the Fairfield Daily Ledger on Wednesday, August 9, 1944. The "Gradus" version appears to come from a Ancestry family tree of a descendant of the son Alfred "Fred" D. Maasdam, but that version appears to be the least credible - the "Gradus" name actually refers to a brother of Jacob whose name appears as "Gradus" on early census reports but whose full given name was "Gergardus Hagan Maasdam" (see: Geerhardus Hagens "Gradus" Maasdam. Due to these variations, am revising this memorial on February 26, 2016 to just using the middle initial "G", although the "Gesset" version as used on the death record should be considered most credible of the three name versions since it is on a vital record. There would be no 1871 birth record in Iowa for Jacob to provide any clarification (Iowa did not mandate/keep birth records until 1880). > The death record listed the parent names, but they may well have been Americanized (Leonard and Marie) somewhat. The headstone inscriptions and/or their FindAGrave memorials list their names as "Leendert Maasdam" and "Mary E. Hagens Maasdam", so that may be of interest to family members/researchers. > Jacob's business partner in what was to become known as Maasdam Barns was E. G. Wheeler. MAASDAM DIED SUDDENLY LAST EVENING Jacob G. Maasdam, 73, well known Jefferson county stockman, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home south of Fairfield at 8:15 last evening. He had been in failing health for some time, but had not been seriously ill. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Monger funeral home in charge of Dr. Curtis R. Douglass. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Maasdam was born February 14, 1871 at Pella, Iowa. He was married in 1895 to Miss Catherine Wagman (sic. Wagaman) who preceded him in death of October 17, 1931. In 1906 they moved to Jefferson county where he was engaged for a number of years in the importing and breeding of draft horses. E. G. Wheeler (sic. see link above), his partner in the firm of Maasdam and Wheeler, passed away about five years ago. In recent years Mr. Maasdam had been engaged in the breeding of Angus cattle. In 1936 he was married to Mrs. Ann Wagner of Burlington, who survives (sic. where is she buried ??). Also surviving are two daughters, Marie E. Maasdam and Elizabeth L. Maasdam, both at home; two sons, W. K. Maasdam of Fairfield and Fred of Ottumwa; three granddaughters, Miss Kathryn Maasdam, Fairfield, Mrs. Dayne Stout (sic. a/k/a Winston Stout), Burlington and Miss Mary Maasdam, Ottumwa; four sisters, Miss Rebecca Maasdam, Mrs. C. H. Wormhoudt, and Mrs. Elizabeth Vander Wilt, all of Pella, Ia., and Miss Marie E. Maasdam, Colorado Springs, Colo.; four brothers, Lane of Sully, Ia., Will of Pella, Gradus of Medford, Oregon, and Abe of Steamboat Spring, Colo. One sister, Sarah, and on (sic. one) brother, Lewis, preceded him in death. ----------------- Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Wednesday August 9, 1944 Pg. 3 Col. 5 OBITUARY JACOB GERRIT MAASDAM Jacob Gerrit Maasdam (sic. the middle name "Gerrit" may have been in error), oldest son of Leonard and Marie Hagens Maasdam, was born February 14, 1871 at Pella, Iowa. He passed away at 8:15 p.m. at his home south of Fairfield on July 30, 1944 very suddenly from a heart ailment. He was united in marriage to Catherine Charlotte Wagaman of Pella, Iowa, who preceded him in death October 17, 1931. In 1936 he was married to Anne Taylor Wagner (sic) of Burlington who survives with his four children (sic. from his first marriage): William K., Marie E. and Elizabeth L. of Fairfield, Iowa and Fred D. of Ottumwa. He also leaves twin granddaughters, Kathryn C. Maasdam of Fairfield and Kathleen Maasdam Stout of Burlington, and Mary E. Maasdam of Ottumwa. The following brothers and sisters survive: Miss Rebecca Maasdam, Mrs. Henry VanderWilt (sic), Mrs. C. H. Wormhoudt, and William H. Maasdam of Pella, Leonard L. Maasdam of Sully, Marie S. Maasdam of Colorado Springs, Col.; Abraham G. Maasdam of Clark, Colo.; and Gradus H. Maasdamof Medford, Oregon. Also a step-daughter, Mrs. John Auge of Ft. Madison, Iowa survives. He leaves a number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah and a brother Louis. Mr. Maasdam moved fro Pella, Iowa to this county January 13, 1906 to the Thomas Crawford farm 3 1/2 miles south of Fairfield and resided there until August 28, 1911, when he moved to the I. D. Jones farm one mile stouth of Fairfield where he has since lived. He was a member of the firm of Maaadam and Wheeler, importers and breeders of Belgian horses and Angus cattle. Mr. Maasdam made several trips to Belgium and the British Isles to purchase horses and cattle. His last importation was as recent as 1935. Mr. Maasdam was greatly interested in the improvement and development of pure bred livestock. His father was one of the pioneer importers and breeders of Percherons in Iowa. Services were conducted August 1, 1944 from the Monger Funeral Home and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Fairfield, Iowa. The pallbearers were: E. W. Fritts, Stanley Workman, J. B. Copeland, Clarence Glass, Frank McClain and T. F. McNew.
