MCCAIN DIES FROM POISON Wednesday afternoon at 4:40 p. m., Mrs. Jay McCain died at her home in Nodaway as a result of drinking carbolic acid. The lady had been in poor health since February, 1923, and last August had an operation in a hospital in Creston. She had been mentally deranged for some time past, and for the last ten days or so she has been having brooding spells. At 3:40 o' clock on Wednesday afternoon, she called to her husband from the bedroom saying "Jay, I have taken poison." When he entered the room she was unconscious. Doctors were called, but she never regained consciousness and nothing could be done for her. On the dresser in the room was found a 6 oz. bottle of carbolic acid, with about half the contents gone. They could not be sure how much she had taken, as there was no knowledge of the poison being in the house and do not know how much was in the bottle. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the pastor Rev. Paul Hicks. The many friends of the family extend their sincere sympathy. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church here in 1907 and was true and faithful in both her labors and attendance until her health failed her. She was united in marriage to J. W. McCain in 1906. Her last illness began in February 1923 during which time she suffered a great deal. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, J. W. McCain, mother, Mrs. Parcher, who has made her home with her for the past thirty-one years and who has been very devoted to her, four brothers, Lyman Parcher of Buffalo Gap, South Dakota, Noah Parcher of Erskine, Canada, Frank O. Parcher of Nodaway, Iowa, and John Parcher of Monroe, South Dakota, three sisters, Mrs. John H. Bowers, Mrs. Andrew J. Brown, and Mrs. Roxie Smith, all of Nodaway, also ten nephews and ten nieces, besides a host of very near and dear friends. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, March 14, 1924 at the Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Paul H. Hicks assisted by Rev. Overholser. Interment was made in Nodaway Cemetery. The relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Mamie Lyman of Corning, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Spencer and Neil Parcher of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. Carl McCreedy of Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Parcher of Villisca, Miss Gertie Tucker, Isaac Harlow, and so Jess of Brooks, ad Mr. and Mrs. William Neller and daughter of near Villisca.
