Sterling, one of the most esteemed citizens of this section, passed away at her home in Lawsonia on Sunday afternoon at about 4:00 o'clock. Death was due to infirmities of age and was hastened by a fall several months ago. She was eighty-two years of age. Mrs. Sterling was born in Lawsonia on April 13, 1856 where she had spent her entire life, and was the daughter of the late John W. Lawson and Mrs. Retta Nelson Lawson, who were prominent in the settlement of this section of the Eastern Shore and in the civic and religious life of Lawsonia and Crisfield. She was the widow of the late George F. Sterling, prominent resident, who at the death of his father, Clark Sterling, succeeded him in the mercantile business and who was at one time the postmaster here. He passed away late in February, 1932. An active life-time member of the Asbury M.E. Church, before the fall which confined her to her bed until the end came Sunday afternoon, there was seldom a meeting held in the church that she did not attend. She was of the highest type Christian character, beloved by all who knew her. Her home was her greatest pride and joy and it was there that she spent most of her time when she was not attending church duties. She was a wonderful wife and mother and was a fine neighbor. Mrs. Sterling took the greatest delight in helping everyone that she was able, especially those more unfortunate than herself. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Marie Ford, of this city, and Mrs. George R. Nelson, of Baltimore and two sons, State Bank commissioner Warren F. Sterling, of Baltimore and J. Coyne Sterling, cashier of the Bank of Crisfield. One sister, Mrs. Joseph Cullen, of this city, also survives. Funeral services were held from the Asbury M.E. Church, which she loved so well, on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. J.T. Rowlenson, pastor of the church, officiated at the final rites. Interment was in the Asbury cemetery.
