Sterling Passes Away At Local Hospital END COMES AFTER LIFE OF 84 YEARS George F. Sterling, one of the most prominent citizens of this community, died at the McCready Memorial Hospital, in this city Friday afternoon, February 26, at 5:30 o'clock. Although he had been in ill health for some time, death was due to pneumonia which he contracted only a short time before. Had he lived until May 5, Mr. Sterling would have been 85 years of age. He spent his entire life in Lawsonia where he was born. In early manhood he was associated with his father, the late William Clark Sterling, in the conduct of a general mercantile store. Later he was associated with his brother-in-law, I. T. Sterling, in the seafood business. After this he again engaged in the mercantile business which he continued until a few years ago when he retired. Some years ago he was appointed Post Master at Crisfield, succeeding his brother, the late John E. Sterling and served one term in that capacity. Later he was appointed Post Master at Lawsonia and held that appointment for several years. Being an ardent Prohibitionist, he became affiliated with that political party when it was launched several years ago and was happy in the thought that he lived to see the ideals for which he labored enacted into law, even if the Prohibition party was not successful. Fifty-eight years ago, he was married to Miss Evelyn Lawson, daughter of the late John W. Lawson, who survives him. He is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ernest B. Nelson and Mrs. George R. Nelson, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Sherwood L. Ford, of Crisfield, and two sons, Warren F. and J. Coyne Sterling, President and Cashier, respectively, of the Bank of Crisfield. Three sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Chelton, Mrs. A. Jennie Riggin and Mrs. I. T. Sterling, all of Crisfield, also survive. The deceased was a member of Asbury M. E. Church which he joined when a young man. He was at one time leader of the choir and took an active part in all church work. He was a consistent Christian and enjoyed the respect, the esteem and the confidence of the entire community. It can be truly said that in his passing away a good man has gone to join the silent majority beyond the grave. And no one, who knew him, doubts that in the last day he will receive the reward that is promised the righteous. He was, in the words of his Master, faithful over the things that were committed to his keeping in this life, and in the life to come, will be made ruler over many things. In the death of George F. Sterling, the widow has lost a kind husband and loving companion; the sons and daughters, an affectionate father and wise counselor; the church, a loyal supporter and active worker; and the community, an upright citizen and true neighbor. Funeral services were conducted from Asbury Church Monday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. T. J. Sard, after which the body was laid to rest in Asbury cemetery.
