Funeral services for the late Alvin C. Hasvold will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Clare church, conducted by Rev. O.H. Hove, with military honors accorded by the local posts of the American Legion and the VFW. Alvin C. Hasvold, for the past ten years was a farmer in Clare township, died at 5:30 Tuesday morning at Flandreau hospital, where on Monday he had submitted to a major operation. When he was admitted to the hospital Thursday evening his ailment was diagnosed as duodenal ulcer, and under observation it became apparent Monday morning that an operation was imperative. Vigorous and determined, he had not given up to illness until it was necessary, with the result that when the crisis came the patient did not have the vitality to withstand the shock. At funeral services to be held this afternoon members of the American Legion and of the VFW will assembly to pay honor to a comrade whose service record made him worthy of their tribute. Mr. Hasvold served with the distinguished 89th Division, and saw active service with headquarters company in the Meuse-Argonne, at St. Michel, and was with the army occupation in Germany. Of eleven from Flandreau who enlisted in the 89th, George Fitzgerald and Dean Bigelow were killed in action, and Mr. Hasvold is the second to pass away since the contingent returned home. Comrades who have been designated to comprise the firing squad for the services today are Andy Paulson, Henry Amundson, Henry Leudemann, Arthur Olson, W.F. McLaren, I.E. Locke, J.O. Johnson and John Trehanis, with H.D. Hales as commander. Alvin Charles Hasvold was born May 24, 1890, at Flandreau, the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Hasvold, pioneer residents of Moody county. He was reared in the Lutheran faith and was baptized and confirmed by the venerable Rev. J.A. Blilie. He enjoyed school facilities provided by Flandreau public schools, completing the course. He was married at Flandreau on Sept 24, 1924, to Miss Mary Malloy of New Hampton, Iowa, with Rev. G.E. Kelly officiating. For two years following marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hasvold made their home in Tulsa, Okla., then returned to Moody county to make their home on their farm in Clare township. In all those years his family and his farming operations have occupied his chief interests. Stability of character was the motive for a life which made him always a conscientious citizen. Surviving him are the widow and three children-Lauritz 12; Robert 11 and Richard 4. Brothers and sisters who survive are Adolph P. Hasvold, Mina, SD; Helmer R., Lomita, CA; Melvin, Flandreau; Laura Cassidy, formerly of California, but now living in this city; Wilhelm Hasvold, Clare township; Mrs. Alida Buck, Egan; and Mrs. S.L. (Hulda) May, Flandreau. He is preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Herman, who died in infancy , and Gustave L. who passed away five years ago. An aged uncle, Andrew Hasvold, resides at St. Lawrence, SD. Interment is to be made in the cemetery adjoining Clare church.
