Melvin Hasvold, 70, who passed away on New Year's day, after a lingering illness, had been a resident of Moody county for many years. He came to Moody county at the age of five years with his parents and lived on a farm in Clare township. Mr. Hasvold followed various occupations during his life time but his main interest was in farming which he continued up to a year ago. During his life time, Mr. Hasvold was engaged in farming, well drilling, threshing, real estate, road construction, garage and implement business. Melvin Hasvold was born October 13, 1876, at Coon Valley, WIsconsin, the third son of Lauritz and Helen Hasvold. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. He attended schools in Moody county and in Brookings. He was united in marriage to Regina Inga Dahl December 31, 1889, and they lived together on the home farm in Clare township until her death, March 15, 1915. In the fall of 1917 he moved to Flandreau and has resided here until the time of his death. He married Armelia Larson of Egan, SD, on September 23, 1938. It is a little more than a year ago that Mr. Hasvold became ill and sought medical aid for his illness. During these many months he has been very patient and waited for the time when God would call him from this vale of sorrows. Death came to Mr. Hasvold Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1947. He is survived by his wife Armelia, his children: Reuben Hasvold, Minneapolis, MN; Malcolm Hasvold, Flandreau; Eudora, Mrs. Wm. Deger, Minneapolis; and Lawrence Hasvold, Flandreau. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Elaine, Marjorie, Marilyn, Arlyce, Darlene, Marvin, Mac and James, and one great-granddaughter, Diane. Two brothers survive him, Helmer Hasvold, Los Angeles, CA and Wilhelm Hasvold, Flandreau, and three sisters, Laura, Mrs. Michael Cassidy; Alida, Mrs. Louis Buck; Hulda, Mrs. S. L. May, all of Flandreau, and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. Services were conducted Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran church, Flandreau, with the pastor Rev O. G. Salveson in charge. Favorite hymns were sung by a quartette, Mrs. Oscar F. Smith, Mrs. Kenneth Rewalt, Arthur R. Johnson and Roger Hanson. Sigurd Rislov presided at the organ. The Orvedahl funeral home had charge of the arrangements. A daughter, Eudora Deger, and a son, R. V. Hasvold, both of Minneapolis, came to attend the last rites. Business associates who were here were W. O'Hare, branch manager of the J.I. Case company, Ed Miller, assistant manager, R.H. Pullman, service manager, and George Theodeson, territory manager. Melvin died at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 18 days of bladder cancer.
