Mr. Hasvold came to Dakota Territory in 1881 and was active in the early life of the state. He served one term as country treasurer of Moody County, he was a county commissioner and was elected from that county to represent them in the Legislature. He was a state Senator from 1889 to 1890 and was reelected to serve in the House of Representatives from 1901 to 1902. His son, Helmer, served in the House of Representatives from 1919-20. Mr. Hasvold's home was in Flandreau where he was a member of the Lutheran Church and the A.O.U.W (Ancient Order of United Workmen-fraternal insurance organization.). Obit: Flandreau LAURITZ HASVOLD CALLED BY DEATH ON DECEMBER 30 Was One of Moody County's Prominent Residents Since Early Eighties FIRST SENATOR Was Honored Many Times by The People and Served Faithfully Always One of the outstanding pioneers of Moody county passed away Sunday morning, December 30, 1928, when death claimed Lauritz Hasvold. Mr. Hasvold had been in failing health for some time with occasional periods of improvement in his condition which renewed hope for his recovery. Saturday he had enjoyed an especially good day. During the evening he listened to a musical program over the radio and discussed the merits of his favorite musicians and writers with members of the family. During the night his strength failed and shortly before seven o'clock Sunday morning he breathed his last. Mr. Hasvold was born in Søndre Land, Norway, December 11, 1848, the son of Petter Hasvold and Maren Andrea Hasvold. He came to the United States on July 10, 1868, and became a resident of Coon Valley, Vernon County, Wisconsin and resided there until he moved to Moody county, South Dakota, in 1882. He was married to Miss Helene Hanson at Halfway Creek Lutheran church on December 10, 1871. To this union ten children were born. One son, Herman is dead. The nine surviving children are Adolph Hasvold, Mina, SD; Helmer R. Hasvold, Aberdeen, SD; Melvin Hasvold, Flandreau, SD; Mrs. Laura Cassidy, San Francisco, CA; Gustave L. Hasvold, Sioux Falls, SD; Wilhelm Hasvold, Flandreau, SD; Mrs. Alida Buck, Egan, SD; Alvin Hasvold, Flandreau, SD; Mrs. Hulda May, Egan, SD. He also leaves two brothers and a sister. The brothers are Olaf and Andrew, both residents of Flandreau. The sister is Mrs. Carl A. Neprud, Coon Valley, Wisconsin. There are 21 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The funeral, which was one of the largest ever held in Moody County, was from the residence at 2:00 o'clock, with services at the Flandreau Lutheran church at 2:15. Rev J.A. Blillie was the officiating minister. Interment was in the family plot in the cemetery of Concordia Lutheran church in Clare township of which congregation Mr. Hasvold had been one of the founders. The pallbearers were Rueben, Malcolm and Lawrence Hasvold, Morris Hasvold, Harlan Hasvold and John Gebhart. The honorary pallbearers were James F. Goodsell, Charles Chamberlin, H.J. Grothem, Ole Ellefson, C.S. Brakke and Lewis Benson. Mr. Hasvold was the type of man that his neighbors and fellows loved to honor and whom they felt free to call upon for service in any worthy cause or undertaking. When South Dakota was admitted to statehood in 1889 the people of Moody county called upon him to act as their first senator in the crucially important first legislative session. In 1901 he was again sent to the Legislature, this time serving as a member of the House of the Seventh Session. In 1885 he was elected County Commissioner (see newspaper articles in appendix) and in 1904 he was chosen Treasurer of Moody county. At this time he moved from his farm and located in Flandreau, where he resided until his death. Before coming to Moody county he served as supervisor of his township in Wisconsin and was president of the township board for four years. He was instrumental in securing the location of Riggs Institute for Flandreau. He gave freely of his time to many activities for the welfare of his community. He was one of the organizers of the Moody County Farmers Mutual Insurance company and served as president of the company for many years. Lauritz Hasvold was a man of the highest character. Of him it can be said that he was faithful to every trust placed in him. His neighbors and all who knew him had implicit confidence in his word, a confidence that was never betrayed. As a father and husband he had the love and affection of those nearest him. He was a home lover and for many years in the pioneer days the Hasvold farm in Clare township was pointed out as an outstanding example of what could be accomplished in a new country. His was a useful, inspiring career and in his passing Moody county has lost one of its most valuable citizens.
