Buford, chairman of the board of county commissioners for Madison county, died at her home in Virginia City on Sunday, August 19, 1923, at the age of 62 years. Amelia C. Steffens was born in Galesburg, Ill., on January 14, 1860, where she spent her childhood days, coming with her sister Josephine to Montana in November, 1874. Upon arriving in Montana, they stopped with their uncle, Chris Darnutzer, on the Beaverhead valley, about five miles below the Point of Rocks. The following summer her mother, Mrs. Margaret Steffens, with the remainder of her family - Julia, Anna, Elizabeth, Ida, Gus and Henry came to Montana and arrived at the Chris Darnutzer home on the Beaverhead valley on July 12, 1875. In October of the same year Mrs. Steffens and her family removed to Virginia City, where Julia, Amelia, Ida and Henry finished their educations. On the 7th day of April, 1866 (1886), Amelia was united in marriage to Charles H. Buford, who now survives her, together with her sister Elizabeth both living in Virginia City. She is also survived by her brother Gus, who is a prominent merchant of Bozeman, and her two sons, Walter W. Buford cashier of the Sheridan State bank, at Sheridan, and Luther L. Buford of Virginia City, head mechanic for all the road machinery for Madison county. On June 28, 1919, Mrs. Buford suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which she recovered fairly well, though a slight blood pressure seemed to remain as a constant affliction. Mr. Buford took her to the Mayo clinic at Rochester, Minn., the following winter in the hope that some improvement in her physical condition might be effected, but to no avail, and they returned to Virginia City in the following spring. Her second stroke of paralysis occurred on July 16 last, from which she lingered until death finally relieved her of her suffering on the above mentioned date. Mrs. Buford was of a kind, gentle, loving disposition, and an industrious, hard working woman. She was self-sacrificing, in fact no one was turned from her door hungry or in need, if within her power to minister to their wants. She was a kind, affectionate wife and mother, a true Christian, a kind and obliging neighbor and was highly respected by all who knew her. Her funeral was conducted from the family home in the south part of town on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Franklin L. Gibson of the Episcopal church, and this last sad service was attended by a very large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends, after which the body was gently conducted to its last resting place.
