He had been failing rapidly the past two months, and was seriously ill a week before his death. Mr. Steffens was born Mar. 23, 1857 in Burlington, Ia., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Steffens. As a young man he came to Virginia City, where he was married to Ida Pease, daughter of Henry A. Pease, well known jeweler who came to Alder gulch in 1864, and Mrs. Pease. From his father-in-law he learned the jewelry business and in 1882, with Mr. and Mrs. Pease, he and Mrs. Steffens moved to Bozeman and the men became partners in the operation of a jewelry store. In 1898 Mr. Steffens was attracted to Alaska by the gold rush, establishing a jewelry business at Juneau, and later he went to the Dawson country. Returning to Bozeman about 1900 he established his own jewelry store, which for nearly 40 years, until his illness and death, he operated at the same location. Funeral services were held at the Dokken chapel in Bozeman Saturday afternoon, with interment in Hillside cemetery in Virginia City. He is survived by his son, Claude Pease Steffens of Bozeman, a granddaughter, a great grandson; his divorced wife, Mrs. Ida Steffens of Los Angeles and nieces and nephews, including Walter Buford of Bozeman. ~~ Gustave G.
