Steffens, one of the most prominent citizens of Southern Montana, and during the past several years a resident of Ennis, died early Tuesday morning, November 27, 1917, at Long Beach, Cal., where he had gone about three months ago in the hopes of improving his health, which had been extremely poor during the past year. He was born in Galesburg, Ill., April 30, 1869, and came to Montana with his mother, the late Margaret Steffens, July 12, 1875, making him eligible to the distinction of being a pioneer of the state. In early life Mr. Steffens affiliated himself with the printing profession, serving his apprenticeship with the Madisonian office under the master journalist, Thomas Baker, now a resident of Helena. While engaged in the newspaper business he became interested in politics and soon was induced to accept a deputyship in the office of the county clerk and recorder, Barclay Jones. Upon the death of that official Mr. Steffens became a candidate for the office, making the race on the republican ticket. He was elected by a handsome majority over his opponent and held the office continuously during four successive terms. Early in the spring of 1903 he, with the late Morse Davis and the writer of these lines, secured control of the Alder Gulch Times, of which newspaper Mr. Steffens remained the manager until the summer of 1906, when he sold his interest in the paper and became a bookkeeper in the Elling State bank, holding this position for about three years, or until the Southern Montana bank of Ennis was organized, when he became the cashier of that financial institution and was still the occupant of that position at the time of his death. Fraternally, Mr. Steffens was an Elk, having been a charter member of Oro y Plata Lodge No. 390, to which he gave his closest attention and honorable cooperation. His funeral services will be conducted under the auspices of that lodge in the city hall auditorium Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. From the hall his remains will be followed to Hillside cemetery by members of the lodge in a body. Mr. Steffens is survived by his wife and two children, Olivine, aged 12 years, and Rene, aged 10 years. Two sisters and a brother, also, are left to mourn his departure, Miss Lizzie Steffens and Mrs. Charles H. Buford of this city and Gusv J. Steffens of Bozeman. The sincere sympathy of all people in Virginia City and Ennis is extended to the bereaved relatives, and especially is this true in the case of the sisters and brother, who, during the past few years have lost mother and three sisters from the family. Miss Lizzie Steffens has been totally blind since childhood and these afflictions to her are sore, indeed. Henry Steffens was an honorable gentleman in the highest sense that term implies. To man, woman or child, saint or sinner, he always extended a cordial greeting that lent a ray of light to brighten their pathway in the journey of life. He commanded the respect of all sects and classes of people, as the universal regret at his taking away testifies. It was so perfectly natural for him to do right that friends hardly appreciated his true worth until the thread of life was severed, when they awakened to the realization that a good and righteous man had been taken from their midst. ~~ Henry E.
