Mrs. Margaret Steffens was born in Anton Canton, Switzerland, December 16, 1827, and was therefore nearly 81 years of age. Her maiden name was Margaret Darnutzer. She came to America in 1845 and located in Burlington, Iowa. She was married to Ernest Steffens on May 8, 1852 (sic). Mr. Steffens died in 1874, and a year afterward, 1875, she came to Virginia City with her children as she believed that there were better opportunities for both herself and her children, as she was left without any means to raise them. This city has been her home ever since her arrival in Alder gulch. The surviving children are Mrs. John H. Reis (sic), Missoula, Montana; Mrs. G. B. Wheat, Twin Bridges; Mrs. C. H. Buford, Misses Lizzie and Ida Steffens and Henry Steffens of this city, and G. J. Steffens of Bozeman. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Baker of Twin Bridges, and Mrs. Lena Shoup of Salmon City, Idaho. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the family home and was conducted by Rev. G. W. G. Van Winkle of St. Paul's Elling Memorial church, assisted by the choir. The pall bearers were J. Albright, C. W. Sherwood, M. M. Duncan, W. J. Finney, George W. Reif and Joseph Smith II. The floral offerings were many and there was one very large and handsome piece. The funeral was largely attended. The remains were buried in the family lot in Hillside cemetery. Mrs. Margaret Steffens was a remarkable woman. She was left a widow 34 years ago with a large family of children to raise without any property to maintain them. She came to Alder gulch where there were more opportunities for her growing children than in the thickly settled east. While the struggle was a hard one she successfully overcame every obstacle and endured the trials of privation and raised her children in such a manner that they have become important men and women in the community and state. She was noted for her sterling character. She was loved and appreciated by all of her old-time neighbors who spoke of her in words of the highest praise. Her life was filled with the privations of a pioneer, but she lived to a ripe old age and when the end came she was comforted by the love and admiration of her children. Her life, measured by the things that endure, was a success, and when she was called to go hence she leaves behind her the memories of a noble woman and a well spent life. ~~ Ernest Steffens and Margaret Darnutzer were married on October 7, 1852 in Des Moines County, Iowa.
