Funeral services were held yesterday. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stratford Courier August 21, 1924 OBITUARY Barquist Andrew G. Barquist was born June 6, 1840 in Amots Bruk, Ockelbo socken, Gestrickland, Sweden. He passed away at the family home here August 10, 1924, having reached the ripe old age of 84 years, 2 months, 4 days. During the year 1857 he came with his parents to America. They came over in the slow sailing vessels of that day and it required twelve weeks for them to make the trip across the ocean. They located in Altoona, Ills., on their arrival here living there until 1863 when the family moved to Galesburg, Ills. Deceased was married in Galesburg to Miss Christena Anderson on November 2, 1866 and in 1881 he moved with his family to Iowa settling on a farm six miles east of Stratford. They lived on this farm and prospered there until 1897, when he bought land in the east part of Stratford and built a fine home upon it and here he spent the remainder of his lifetime. Six children were born to them and those who are left to mourn are: Frank A. Barquist of Stanhope; Minnie (Mrs. T.H. Basket), Edwin H. and Agnes M., all of Stratford. His wife, one daughter, Emma, and one son, Arthur, have preceded him in death. He also leaves two brothers, Peter W. Barquist and George L. Barquist, both of Des Moines, six grandchildren, many other relatives and a large host of friends, to mourn his passing. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden and has always been a faithful member of the local Lutheran church since coming to this community. For many years he served as church treasurer and church trustee and was highly respected and accorded every honor of the local church by his fellow members. He was always working and striving for the upbuilding of the church here and never let an opportunity pass by to help wherever he could in the church work. In October, 1918, he was stricken with paralysis but he recovered sufficiently so that he could mingle among his friends and acquaintances, but he never regained his former strength so that when he suffered a second stroke on August 7 he never recovered from it. When deceased was stronger he took an active part in the politics of this county and he held numerous offices of trust and always with the best of satisfaction to his constituents. He was a member of the local school board for a number of years and for several years was its president. He served in other offices within the gift of the people and always to their satisfaction. In all his business he was known for his strict honesty in his transactions. He was always interested in the progress and improvement of the community and active in all things for the good of the locality. Such men as he leave a real mark of distinction behind them and he will be long revered and long remembered. Funeral services were held from the home and from the Lutheran church here Wednesday afternoon of last week conducted by Rev. C.A. Callerstrom of Ogden, and the remains tenderly laid to rest beside those of his wife in the South Marion cemetery.
