Barquist passed away peacefully about 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon. Although it has been known for many months that he could not recover yet his death comes as a blow to his wife, children, aged father, sisters and brothers, and to his many friends as well. Last summer he visited Mayo Brothers at Rochester, Minn., but after an exploration it was found that he was suffering with the worst form of cancer of the stomach which no operation could benefit. Shortly afterward he came to his home here and for a time seemed to improve but during the early days of November he was compelled to remain indoors and since then has failed rapidly. The last few weeks he was unable to sustain any nourishment of any kind. The grief stricken relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of all Stratford. Stratford Courier December 23, 1920 OBITUARY Barquist Carl Arthur Barquist was born in Galesburg, Ills., November 20, 1872, and died at his home here December 15, 1920, at the age of 48 years and 25 days. In 1881 together with his parents, brothers and sisters, he moved to a farm east of Stratford where he lived until the year 1915 taking over the management of it after his parents moved to this place. October 20, 1897 he was married to Miss Clara Felleson. To them were born four children, two of whom preceded the mother and father in death. In 1915 the family moved to Sidney, Neb., for the benefit of Mrs. Barquist's health but the western climate did not prevent the death of the wife and mother and on March 31, 1917, she passed away. Immediately afterward the family moved back to Stratford and on February 27, 1918, deceased was married to Mrs. Hulda Barquist. He leaves to mourn his early passing, his bereaved wife, his two children, Leslie George and Florence Lorene May, his step children: Blanche, LeRoy and Hazel, his aged father, A.G. Barquist, two sisters, Mrs. T.H. Basket and Miss Agnes Barquist, both of Stratford, two brothers, Frank of Stanhope and Edwin of Stratford, besides numerous cousins and other relatives by whom he was beloved. He was confirmed in the local Lutheran church with the class of 1890 and has since been a member of that church being at the time of his death a member of the board of trustees of the church. A little more than three years ago he came to this place and built a modern home for the comfort of his family. He also purchased a tract of land northwest of the corporate limits which he farmed and cared for preparing to enjoy the fruits of his labor in peace and comfort. It as during the early portion of last summer that he first began ailing and after consulting doctors at Des Moines he went to Rochester where the Drs. Mayo made an exploration and it was learned then that he was suffering from the most dangerous cancers of the stomach for which nothing could be done. Since that time he gradually failed until death claimed him. Although he knew that death would inevitably claim him and although he suffered intense pain and especially during the last weeks before his death, he was patient through it all and never complained of his lot but faced the inevitable with a Christian's fortitude and courage. During his illness he many times stated that he was ready to go to that Better Land. Last spring he was elected a member of the town council and during the few months which he served his judgement of matters of import was always deeply considered. As a man he was liked and admired by all as was attested by one of the most largely attended funerals held here for a long time. The entire countryside, it seemed, came to pay their last respects to a departed friend. The out-of-town relatives who were here for the funeral were: P.W. Barquist and daughter, Mrs. Russell Mills, of Des Moines; Peter Barquist of Fort Dodge and the Andrew Larson family of Boone. A large number of people from Stanhope were also here for the services. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence and at 1:30 from the Lutheran church in charge of Rev. S.P. Holmberg and interment was made in the South Marion cemetery. Card of Thanks There are hours that come into the lives of some, when every impulse of the heart is buried under its weight of sorrow. We stand there today; yet we would fain give expression to the gratitude that wells up from the depths of our hearts as we remember the kindnesses of those who have done so much to comfort us and to brighten for us a starless sky.
