The remains were brought to... Read More	PASSING OF A. PURSELL Another of Mills County's Pioneers Gone -- Dies at Shenandoah January 11 On last Saturday morning, January 11, at the home of his son D. W. in Shenandoah, the spirit of Andrew Pursell, better known in this county for many years as Esquire Pursell, took its flight. He was sick but a few days, having been well enough the preceding Sunday to attend church, hence his death came as a surprise to his friends in this county who remembered him the past year as being so well and active. The remains were brought to Malvern Monday morning and the funeral was held from the First Baptist Church at 11:30 a.m. conducted by Rev. J. E. Wilkins, the pastor. A special choir consisting of Messrs. Fred Stone and Allen Smith and Miss Bessie Smith and Mrs. Cadwell furnished the music, singing old time favorite hymns of the deceased. Andrew Pursell was born in Boston, Kentucky, May 24, 1818, and had he lived until next May would have reached the ripe old age of 90 years. He was married to Miss Ellen Brown in Nelson County, Kentucky, June 28, 1838. To them were born fourteen children, of whom two sons, Charles of Hastings and Will of Shenandoah, and two daughters, Mrs. D. Henderson of Hastings and Mrs. Samuel Scott of Lincoln, Nebraska, survive him and were in attendance at the funeral. Three others lived until they were grown, Brison, Samuel and Mrs. Ellen Boles. The first named died in the Union Army in 1861, the second at Hastings in 1894 and the last in Merrick County, Nebraska, in 1888. He moved with his family to Oquawka, Illinois in 1841 and to Mills County, Iowa in 1857. For a time he lived on the ground now occupied by the Malvern Fair Grounds and later moved to his farm north of Hastings where he lived until a few years ago. For 35 years continuously he was elected Justice of the Peace for that precinct, resigning when he moved away. For more than seventy years he led a consistent Christian life, beloved and respected by all who knew him. Few men were as well known over the county as Esquire Purcell. Genial and kindly at all times, he made friends wherever he went. I 1888 he and his good wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and shortly after that time he was called to mourn her death. The past few years he has been specially active for a man of his age and he declared that he never felt better in his life. He was not going to get old. Last summer in company with his son, Charles, he made a trip to the western mountain and while there ascended Pike's Peak with little difficulty to himself, being the oldest man who ever made the ascension. He used to make frequent trips up this way, visiting at Hastings and other places and always called upon us when passing through Malvern. Ever genial and pleasant, he was always a welcome visitor. We will greatly miss him. He was a good citizen, a kindly man and a beloved father and relative. At his funeral, his grandsons, Everett and Marion Purcell, Otis and Arthur Boles, Walter Scott and Fred Henderson, acted as pallbearers. In addition to the family mentioned above, he leaves 37 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. Like a grand old patriarch, he has gone to his reward yet he leaves blessed memories behind with those who knew and loved him. Mary's obituary did not mention that she married after the death of her husband Samuel. Andrew and Mary are in the 1900 Census in Jackson, Montgomery County, Iowa listed as husband and wife. Mary is buried with her first husband and Andrew is buried with his wife Ellen.
