Richard Moberly was in charge of the services and military graveside rites were conducted at the GAR Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry, Benny, Louis, and Harlan Gortmaker, and Paul and George Engelmann. Gortmaker was born Sept. 18, 1893, in McCook county to Jurin J. and Annie Gortmaker. He attended school near Monroe. He came to Hand county in May, 1905, and the family homesteaded south of Miller. He served in World War I, returning to Hand county to farm. He married Elizabeth Gussler, Oct. 31, 1925, and the family lived on a farm in Hand county until 1958 when they moved to Huron. In 1963 they moved to Miller to make their home. Survivors include his widow, five sons, Anthony, Milwaukee; James, Rapid City; Gary, Ft. Hood, Texas; Rodney and Charles, both at hoe; five daughters, Charlotte, Mrs. ben Burgher, Black Hawk; Ethel, Mrs. Don Deuter, Ree Heights, Margie, Mrs. Roy Mitchell, Miller; Genevieve, Mrs. James Parmely, St. Lawrence, Veda, Mrs. Robert Schmidt, Milwaukee; five brothers: John, St. Lawrence, Ben, Monroe; and Lear, August and Avert, Miller; four sisters, Lena Gortmaker, Miller; Mrs. William Bailey, Billings, Mont.; Mrs. Eilert Rand, Humboldt; and Mrs. Ben Boekhoff, Sioux Falls; and 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald, and a daughter, Sharry, his parents, four brothers, and one sister.
