Description	:	Anna married James C. Cochran in Washington Co, KY on March 12, 1812. Ann was usually called Anna by her husband, James. A heart warming story of their adoption of a Mulatto infant son whom they named George Washington, follows. On August 15, 1817, a Mulatto infant son was born on a plantation along the Shenandoah River about 10 miles from Winchester, Frederick Co, VA to a white woman of English descent. His father, part Negro, was a slave on the plantation. He could offer no help, because he was sold shortly thereafter.... Read More	Anna married James C. Cochran in Washington Co, KY on March 12, 1812. Ann was usually called Anna by her husband, James. A heart warming story of their adoption of a Mulatto infant son whom they named George Washington, follows. On August 15, 1817, a Mulatto infant son was born on a plantation along the Shenandoah River about 10 miles from Winchester, Frederick Co, VA to a white woman of English descent. His father, part Negro, was a slave on the plantation. He could offer no help, because he was sold shortly thereafter. When the mother was able she took her son to white friends (possibly relatives), James C. and Anna Cochran, ages 28 and 26, and pleaded with them to raise him so he wouldn't be placed into slavery. They agreed and named the baby infant George Washington, after the father of the Nation. When George was 4 years old they moved to the primitive land in Delaware Co, OH and then to the northern part of MO in 1826, where they built a home in Macon. The Cochrans thought of George as their own son and helped educate him the best they could. Anna taught him from her Bible and a Baptist songbook. James taught him farm work and learn outdoor survival skills. ----- The Washington Standard (Olympia, WA) Saturday, February 16, 1861 "At Cochran's, Chehalis River, Lewis County, W.T., on Sunday, the 3d inst., at six o'clock A.M., Mrs. Anna Cochran, relict of the late James Cochran, in the 70th year of her age." ----- Following is a story about George's devotion to his foster mother, Anna. Centralia Daily Chronicle (WA) October 3, 1967 "HOMESTEAD JOURNAL COCHRANS GIVEN BURIAL ON PRAIRIE Washington's foster parents, the Cochrans, aged and sickened, he succumbing in 1859 and she died two years later during a bitterly cold winter. In 1859, Mr. Cochran died. During the next two years Mrs. Cochran's health waned. But early in the fall of 1860 the temperature dropped to below zero. It was difficult to keep her comfortable and do the added chores caused by the freezing weather. He had to chop holes in the ice bound Chehalis River to water his stock and provide the forage which the animals were unable to gain while the fields were crusted with snow. He had to cut even larger amounts of firewood and store it, for the cold weather continued. To avoid her being lonely, he often took Mrs. Cochran to stay with three of her friends, Mrs. Sidney Ford, Mrs. Joseph Borst, or Mrs. Elkanah Mills. Twice a week her would walk over to visit her. 'Whatever Mother wants,' he told them, 'try to get it for her, and I'll pay you for it. As long as she lives, I want her to be comfortable.' They made it pleasant for her and she enjoyed these visits to households full of gaiety and laughter. Sometimes she stayed several weeks at a time, and then she's send him word she wanted to come home and he's go for her. But her strength failed rapidly and for a time her foster son cared for her as one would for an infant. She died Feb. 3, 1861. All winter, the snow had fallen and frozen; fallen and frozen until it was five feet deep on the level. But George Washington hitched up his pair of ponies and, accompanied by his neighbors, the Waunches and Fords, took the body of his foster mother out to the burial ground on Fjords Prairie and laid it beside that of her husband. Her death left a void in his life. To him, freedom from her care was not freedom but a burden which which he could rid himself only by taking on additional labor. Nature seemed to demand work that winter. Even after the 20th of March the snow lay two feet deep on the edge of the prairie next to his cabin. ... " Anna and James Cochran were first buried in Pioneer Cemetery on Fords Prairie and were later moved to Washington Lawn.
