Description	:	Ann Robertson Johnstone was the daughter of James Johnston (no E) and Elizabeth Armentrout. Her "great grandfather," listed on her gravestone, Zachariah Johnston (1742-1800) was buried here also and likewise, did not have an E in his surname. Johnstone and Johnston were both used in Scotland. On the 1880 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer James Johnston, 65 and his VA born family: wife Lizzie, 45; daughters or sons: Ida G., 14; Thos E., 13; Wm Z., 12; Susan E., 10; ANNIE L., 8; John A., 6 and James McD, also 6, all VA... On the 1880 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer James Johnston, 65 and his VA born family: wife Lizzie, 45; daughters or sons: Ida G., 14; Thos E., 13; Wm Z., 12; Susan E., 10; ANNIE L., 8; John A., 6 and James McD, also 6, all VA born. On the 1900 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found Thomas E Johnston, 32, born Mar 1868; brother Buck Johnston, 31, Oct 1869; sister Susan Johnston, 30 May 1870; sister ANNIE Johnston, 28, Oct 1872; brother Mack Johnston, 22, Mar 1878 and boarder Sarah Lawson (Ancestry lists "Lardson"), 74, Dec 1826, all VA born. On the 1940 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer MackDowell J Johnston, 62; sister Susan M Johnston, 70 and sister ANN R Johnston, 68, all VA born. The highest grade of education was Mack's 3rd year of high school, Susan's 7 and Ann's 6. They lived on state route 687. On 25 Nov 1952, the vast collection of the Zachariah Johnston Papers at the Library of Virginia, was "lent for copying by Ann and Susan Johnston, Lexington, Virginia, through Howard M. Wilson, Fisherville, Virginia." Rev. Howard McKnight Wilson was connected with the Tinkling Spring Church in Augusta Co. and a "moderator of the Lexington Presbytery," formerly connected with this cemetery. He authored some local histories. 1958: Under a photo of the front of Zachariah's 1797 home says: "Shown above is Stone House," built in 1797 by Zachariah Johnston, who will be the subject of a paper by M. W. Paxton at a meeting of the Rockbridge Historical Society Friday, July 25. The house, now the residence of the Misses ANN and SUSAN JOHNSTONE, is one of the few early Rockbridge houses which has remained in the possession of a single family to the present day." Published in the Rockbridge County News, Vol 74, #37, dated 17 July 1958. Ann Robertson Johnstone was born 25 Oct 1872 in Virginia, to parents James Johnstone (sic) and Elizabeth Armentrout. On 21 Feb 1960, she died at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, in Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA. She was a farm owner. The informant was M(atthew) W Paxton of Ross Road in Lexington, VA, (who lived in the old Zachariah Johnston home). VA Cert. of Death #6064. I note just SW of the cemetery and north of the meandering Main Street is both a Johnstone Street and a McMath Street. Two daughters of James Johnston (Susan, died 1964 and Ann, died 1960) added an E to their surname on their Johnstone grave stones, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. Also their sister in law, May Ross (died 1972), wife of their brother John A Johnston, did likewise. In Jan 2020, there were more than 50% additional Johnstons, than Johnstones on Findagrave, located in Scotland. According to Howard McKnight Wilson's 1972 article, he met "Misses Johnston, the last of Zechariah's descendants by that name to occupy the home in Rockbridge.* Out of that contact in 1952 came the permanent photostatic copy of the "Zachariah Johnston Papers, 1742-1856," consisting of 369 photo prints, now in the Virginia State Library in Richmond." *That's Zachariah's home in Lexington. marker says: ANN ROBERTSON JOHNSTONE GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER OF ZACHARIAH JOHNSTONE 1872 - 1960 The Washington & Lee University site for this cemetery says she died on 21 Feb.
