Description	:	Susan McMath Johnstone was the daughter of James Johnston (no E) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Armentrout. Zachariah Johnston her "great grandfather," listed on her gravestone (1742-1800), likewise, did not have an E in his surname. Johnstone and Johnston were both used in Scotland. On the 1880 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer James Johnston, 64; wife Lizzie Johnston, 45; daughters or sons: Ida G. Johnston, 14; Thomas E. Johnston, 13; William Z. Johnston, 12; Susan E. Johnston, 10; Annie L. Johnston, 8; John A. Johnston, 6 and James Mc D. Johnston, 6, all VA born. On the 1900 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer Thomas E Johnston, 32, born Mary 1868; brother Buck Johnston, 30, Oct 1869; sister Susan Johnston, 30, May 1870; sister Annie Johnston, 27, Oct 1872; boarder Mack Johnston, 22, Mar 1878and boarder Sarah Lawson (Ancestry lists Lardson), 73, Dec 1826, all VA born. On 25 Nov 1952, the vast collection of the Zachariah Johnston Papers at the Library of Virginia, was "lent for copying by Ann and Susan Johnston, Lexington, Virginia, through Howard M. Wilson, Fisherville, Virginia." Rev. Howard McKnight Wilson was connected with the Tinkling Spring Church in Augusta Co. and a "moderator of the Lexington Presbytery," formerly connected with this cemetery. He authored some local histories. The rest of the family uses Johnston without the additional E. Both her Johnston parents and grandparents are also buried here. Both Johnston and Johnstone are found in Scotland, but more Johnstons. Susan McMath Johnstone was born 20 May 1870 in Virginia, to parents James Johnstone and Elizabeth Armentrout. On 19 Nov 1964, she died at Stonewall Jackson Hospital,in Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA. The informant was M W Paxton. VA DC. I note just SW of the cemetery and north of the meandering Main Street is both a Johnstone Street and a McMath Street. In 1787 Johnston Street was named in honor of Zachariah Johnston in Augusta County, where he lived. Around 1887, the T in Johnston was accidentally dropped, making it Johnson. Two daughters of James Johnston (Susan, died 1964 and Ann, died 1960) added an E to their surname on their Johnstone grave stones, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. Also their sister in law, May Ross (died 1972), wife of their brother John A Johnston, did likewise. According to Howard McKnight Wilson's 1972 article, he met "Misses Johnston, the last of Zechariah's descendants by that name to occupy the home in Rockbridge.* Out of that contact in 1952 came the permanent photostatic copy of the "Zachariah Johnston Papers, 1742-1856," consisting of 369 photo prints, now in the Virginia State Library in Richmond." *That's Zachariah's home in Lexington. 1958: Under a photo of the front of Zachariah's 1797 home says: "Shown above is Stone House," built in 1797 by Zachariah Johnston, who will be the subject of a paper by M. W. Paxton at a meeting of the Rockbridge Historical Society Friday, July 25. The house, now the residence of the Misses ANN and SUSAN JOHNSTONE, is one of the few early Rockbridge houses which has remained in the possession of a single family to the present day."
