Description	:	James Johnston was the son of Thomas Johnston and Susan McMath Johnston. He married Elizabeth Armentrout in Jan 1864, near the end of our Civil War. On the 1870 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found farmer JAMES Johnston, 55; keeping house: Elizabeth, 35; female I A____, 4; Thos E., 2; Wm Z., 1; Susan, 3/12 and labourer, Thos A Johnston, 21, all Virginia born. Read More	James Johnston was the son of Thomas Johnston and Susan McMath Johnston. He married Elizabeth Armentrout in Jan 1864, near the end of our Civil War. On the 1870 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found farmer JAMES Johnston, 55; keeping house: Elizabeth, 35; female I A____, 4; Thos E., 2; Wm Z., 1; Susan, 3/12 and labourer, Thos A Johnston, 21, all Virginia born. On the 1880 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, dated 22nd June, I found farmer JAMES Johnston, 64; wife Lizzie, 45; sons and daughters: Ida G., 14; Thomas E., 13; William Z., 12; Susan E., 10; Annie L., 8; John A., 6 and James McD., 6 plus 2 servants. All Virginia born. "Mr James Johnston, of Stone Castle is reported to be dangerously ill, we are pained to hear." Published in the Lexington Gazette, Vol 86, #8, dated 20 Feb 1890. "Death of Mr James Johnston. Mr.James Johnston, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Rockbridge county, died at his home, near Lexington, last Monday evening, Feb. 17th, at half past seven o'clock. He had been in failing health for some time, and his end was anticipated by himself and was not unexpected to his friends, he was the son of Thomas Johnston. He was born Nov. 16th, 1814, and was the last survivor of a family of nine sons and daughters. His life with scarcely a break was spent on the beautiful farm on which he was born, which has been the property of himself aud his ancestors for more than a century. The fine old stone mansion house in which he died was also the place of his birth, it was built by his grandfather, Zacheriah Johnston, in 1797. In January, 1864, he married Miss Lizzie Armentrout, of Augusta county, who with four sons and two daughters survives him. His funeral services were preached from the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon by Dr. Preston assisted bv Dr. Shanks, and he was buried in the Lexington cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Mr. J. McD. Alexander, Prof J. J. White, Mr. W. B. Wallace, Mr. J. T. McCrum, Mr. C. M. Figgat, Col. J. K. Edmondson, Mr. G. B. Larrick. Mr. Johnston was a diligent, thrifty and successful farmer. From.his youth he was a consistent member of the Lexington Presbyterian church. His life was a quiet one. He found the things which interested him in his home, his fields and the society of his friends. But though his sphere was not large, it was a very useful one. In his relations as son, husband, father, citizen and Christian, he recognized the duties which devolved upon him and did them well. He has furnished an example of a life simple in its tastes, sturdy in its virtue, uncompromising in its integrity and ever loyal to what he believed to be right." Mr James Johnston, in his 76th year. Mr Johnston married in 1864, Miss Lizzie, eldest daughter of the late Thomas Armentrout, of Riverheads district, who survives with six children.
