Read More	Clayton County Register, IA, Thursday, October 10, 1935, pg. 2, col. 2 Mrs. William Ortman, Pioneer Resident of Guttenberg, Died at Allison GUTTENBERG: Mrs. William Ortman (nee Anna Spangenberg), former long time and highly esteemed Guttenberg resident, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Werner, at Allison, on Wednesday evening of last week at 6:20 o'clock, at the age of 79 years, four months and six days, following an illness of a long duration. The body was brought to Guttenberg for burial. Mrs. Ortman was born in Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany, on May 26, 1856, coming to America with her parents when a small child and settling in Cook county, Ill. When 13 years old she went to Delaware county, Iowa, with her parents. She was married at Dundee to William Ortman when 22 years old. After their marriage, the couple settled on a farm near Elkport, where they lived for many years, then coming to Guttenberg to reside. Her husband preceded her in death in 1914 (sic/1915). Of late years Mrs. Ortman had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Albert Werner, of Allison. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frank Selchow, of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Henry L. Beerman, of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Albert Werner, of Allison; four sons, Frank Ortman of Strawberry Point, Fred, Edward and Walter Ortman, of Charles City; a number of grand and great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends, by whom this worthy mother will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W.J.F. Adix at St. John's Lutheran church in Guttenberg on Saturday afternon, with burial in the City cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near. +++ OBITUARY OF HUSBAND Guttenberg Press, IA, Thursday, August 19, 1915, pg. 1, col. 2 WILLIAM ORTMAN On Friday afternoon, August 13, 1915, at 12:30 o'clock while enjoying his meal at the table at his home in this city William Ortman suddenly passed away, the cause of his death being heart trouble. He had been ailing for some time, but of late was improving rapidly, until Friday when he was called by death suddenly, which was a shock to his family and many friends. William Ortman was born in Bruetz, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on October 7, 1848, and was 66 years, 10 months and 6 days of age at the time of his death. On December 24, 1865, he came to the United States, settling at Elport, Clayton County, Iowa, and later was successfully engaged in farming for many years near Littleport. He was married at Elkport to Miss Mary Jelden, who preceded him in death three years after their marriage. Later he was again married at Elkport to Miss Anna Spangenberg, who survives him. About seven years ago deceased and his family moved from their farm near Littleport to Elkport, where they lived until five years ago, when they came to Guttenberg to reside and where deceased lived until his death. Deceased was an ambitious and honest man during his entire life which won him many friends, and was a kind and true husband, father, brother and friend. All that loving hands could do and medical could suggest was done for him to ward off death, but all to no avail. In the death of Mr. Ortman this city loses one of its most worthy citizens. He was also a member of St. John's Lutheran church. His untimely death is deeply mourned by his wife, 6 sons, Fred, Edward, William and Walter, of Guttenberg, John, of St. Paul, Minn., and Frank, of Elkport, 4 daughters, Mrs. Bertha Allenstein, of Lamont, Iowa, Mrs. Mattie Selchow, of La Crosse, Wis., Mrs. Amanda Beerman and Miss Anna Ortman, of Guttenberg, 2 brothers, Fritz, of Garber, and Henry, of Littleport, 1 sister, Mrs. C. Behren, of Littleport, a number of grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran church in this city Monday afternoon, Rev. Janzig officiating. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew him. +++ OBITUARY OF DAUGHTER, CLARA Elkader Argus, IA, Wednesday, March 23, 1904, pg. 8, col. 3 Bear Creek. On Saturday, March 11th, 1904, death entered the home of William Ortman and wife and took from them their youngest daughter Clara. Little Clara was taken sick on Thursday evening with membraneous croup and died quit suddenly on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Clara Hentrietta Emma Ortman was born May 16th, 1899, and was four years, 9 months and 25 days of age. She was a bright, winsome and loving little child, loved by all who knew her, but God loved her best. Four little girls, Esther Pleck, Mamie Menge, Alice Menge and Gertrude Kriebs, all dressed in white, acted as pall-bearers. Rev. Hertel conducted a very touching funeral service. She leaves to mourn besides the bereaved parents six brothers and four sisters and a host of sorrowing friends.
