Borror and his wife, Melissa West Borror, by Richard Smith, who was married to Anne West, Melissa West Borror’s sister. Richard was living at Hastings, Iowa. Ichabod and his wife were living at Borror’s Corners in Jackson Township of Franklin County, OH. While the letter is undated, Anne West Smith died January 31, 1893 at the age of 45: "Dear Brother and Sister Bud and Lizzie, your letter received today and was glad to hear from you. We are a lonely family without ma. I was a ware if ma died that our happy home would be for ever gone and I was determined she should live if money could save her. So I went to the hot Springs with her and hired one of the best doctors their and staid till he told me I had better take her home. When I got home, I emploied a German Doctor, a graduate of Burlin and kept him till I seen he was not doing any good. then I emploid a doctor at Red Oak that was said to be the best and all to no use. She had to go and leave a family that allmost worshipped her. Her complaint was hardning of the liver and I was gave to understand that it was incurible but I was determind to to keep her if I could for I had come to the conclusion that she was the lovliest thing on this earth. I told the Doctor I would spend everything we had and work by the day before she should die, but she is gone and our home is so lonely. Mr. D. DeTarr preached her funeral. The funeral was preached at the church. He was here every day or to and was here when she died. every one said it was the best sermon he ever preached here. Among things he said was the first thing he thought of after sister Smith breathed her last was “why did I not think and send some word to heaven to my two little boys by Mrs. Smith.” He was very kind to us and exposed himself till he is sick but is geting better now. I went to see him Saturday and gave him a ten dollar bill. I sent you a paper that he was the correspondent that gave an account of ma death. Let me know if you get it. I telegraft to Tillie and Will the same afternoon she died as they lived close to the telegraf ofice. I would like to know when they let you know. I want Charley to write Mr. J. D. DeTarr a good long letter and congratulate him on the noble funearl sermon that he preached for his aunt. and tell him how well we speak of him to our friends in Ohio. I went to Red Oak today and paid the doctor that waited on ma last. O how I miss her loving voice when I come in the house. We are all well as common and doing as well as could be expected. I will close for this time by saying we have had one of the hardest winters here that we have had since we have been here. Good By R. J.
