(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Birth and Dates for Aquilla Greear was taken from the tombstone of Aquilla Greear on old family farm about 6 miles south of Dungannon in Scott County, Virginia. A tracing and photograph of this tombstone, taken in 1990, is in Aquilla's father's files, located in the archives of Judia and Ralph Terry. Lois Temple FGS 253x indicates that there is a stone for Aquilla Greear, that died June 8, 1803, at the Joe Pugh Cemetery on Highway 16. However, no stone for an Aquilla was found by Judia and Ralph Terry in 1990. I don't believe there was a stone at Pugh Cemetery with the name "Aquilla," but think Lois was guessing there was a stone. The death year of 1803 on his tombstone appears to be a stonecutter's error. Following is why we believe 1833 to be his true death year. In 1990, Judia and I visited Lois Temple and copied all of her records pertaining to the Greear family. Among these records was the notebook of John Calvin Greear. Pages 22 and 24 are listings of the children of Shadrack Greear, Sr. and state: "Aquilla Died at 48 yrs Buried in Scott Co." and "Aquilla Greear Died in Grayson ("Grayson" was struck through) is Buried in Scott Co. According to Bible Record he may have been a Brother to Shadrach Sr. (this sentence was struck through). Bible Records his Death June 8 - 1833." Then there are figures below indicating "Aquilla 1833 - 1785 = 48." I don't know who crossed out the two phrases, but believe they were correct in doing so. Previous to this information was the birth dates of Shadrack Sr's children. To me this indicates that the true death date for Aquilla Greear, son of Shadrack Greear, Sr. was June 8, 1833, not 1803, which apparently was a stonemaker's error, as you had indicated. This date would also be after the time that Ed Nickels found the Greear family first living in Scott County. I also checked the Scott County census for 1820 and found the son, who is probably Aquilla still living at that time. I do not have the 1830 or 1840 census to check. A check of the 1840 census should indicate if he died in 1833 or 1842. Ed Nickels, of Blountville, Tennessee, gives a death date for this Aquilla as 29 September 1842. But it is very obvious to me that this was the death date of Aquilla Greer, brother of Shadrack Greear, Sr., based on the following information: "Aquilla wrote his will 24 October 1838 but no probate date is given. It is also recorded in Ashe County Deed Book U, page 329, "registered March 15, 1861." Aquilla named all four of his children in his will. His wife was left his plantation "during her life or widowhood with the mansion house and improvement ..." His son John was to "have the lower end of the land" and Caty the upper end including the dwelling house. Aquilla died before 3 November 1843 when the heirs deeded land in Grayson County (Book 10, page 458)."
