Description	:	At Northville, near Albany, New York, on October 8, 1870, life began for Archie VanDyke, only child of Joseph and Carrie VanDyke. Three years later his father died, and his mother returned to her former home near Portland, Michigan. There, and at Muir nearby, they lived together for nearly 10 years. Three years later his father died, and his mother returned to her former home near Portland, Michigan. There, and at Muir nearby, they lived together for nearly 10 years. When Archie was about 14 years old, his mother was married to Lyman Moore, of Portland. For the first time he was in a home with brothers and sisters: John, a half brother, and Edith, a step sister. Here he spent his teens and some of the years following, sturing up happy memories which he never forgot. He was 21 years old when he took the first of three trips to Montana, spending in all about five years there. On returning from the west, in the spring of '98, he went at once to meet Mina Crowel, whom he had known since a visit to Woodland years before. A few days later, on April 23, they were married. The next month they set up their first home in Billings, Gladwin county. The years that followed were difficult ones. They had settled in a new country and it was hard to make a living. Three children came, Leland, Ruth and Joseph, who helped to give significance to the struggle. Good neighbors lived near who always helped, and so the years passed. From Billings the family moved to Lansing, where they stayed four years, and then to Beaverton near which they have lived near since. Known familiarly as Archie to friends and neighbors wherever he has lived, he has always valued highly the human relationships of life. His first thoughts were for his family, but his interest never stopped within the small circle of his blood relation. He tried to be a good neighbor, and he appreciated the good neighborliness of others. He was happy to be able to served the community in school and township offices, which he filled continuously for more than 25 years. A member, first of the Baptist church and then of the Church of the Brethren, his ideas in religion were simple and practical. He believed in living, according to the knowledge he had, in loving his fellowmen sincerely, and in doing his share of the world's work. The rest he left to God. He died May 4. The loss of a husband and father and relative is shared by Mina VanDyke, wife, and children, Mr. and Mrs. Leland VanDyke, Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Killian and Joseph VanDyke, all of Beaverton, as well as by four grandchildren and many other relatives. Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. John Moore of Detroit, Mr. an Mrs. Ernest Moore of Eaton Rapids, Mrs. Fred Towner of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. John Crowel of Midland, Mr. and Mrs. Jud Phillips of Vermontville, Mrs. Welcome Snyder of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Henry of Freeport and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Winey of Lake Odessa. The funeral was Friday afternoon, May 7, at the Church of the Brethren. It was in charge of Elder Perry Arnold and Rev. Arthur Warner. Burial was in the Dale cemetery.
