Description	:	Slater Newspaper Archibald Montgomery, one of Slater's esteemed citizens passed away last Friday, January 6, 1911, after an illness of several months. The funeral services were held at the Christian Church on Sunday afternoon, and the remains interred at the City Cemetery under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias. The services at the church were conducted by Elder W. T. Hanson, assisted by Rev W. P. Clark. After reading of the scripture and prayer by Rev.Clark, Elder Hanson, before beginning the sermon, read the following brief obituary of the deceased: "Archibald Montgomery was born in Hunt County, Texas, November 22, 1839. At the age of thirteen, he came to Hancock County, Illinois. On October 24, 1861, he enlisted in the Seventh U.S. Cavalry and served until the end of the War. On January 1, 1867, he was married to Miss Hessie Ann Cain, of Hancock County, Illinois. Of this union, eight children were born - six boys and two girls. Of these, five are living: Adolphus, of Memphis, Tennessee; William, Hugh, Arminda and Mrs. William Harper (Lillie) of Slater. He also has two sisters living: Mrs. Mary Jones, of Benton, Arkansas, and Mrs. Susanna Cain of St.Louis, Missouri. Mr. Montgomery and family moved to Saline County, Missouri, from Illinois in March 1869 and settled on a farm west of Slater. They remained there until they moved to Slater in February 1882, where they have since lived. He became a member of the Baptist Church in 1873 and remained such until 1882 when he became a member of the Christian Church and remained such until his death. Mr. Montgomery has been known to the citizens of Slater for more than a quarter of a century and anything we might say of him would not add to his high standing as a Christian gentleman and a good citizen. He was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, one who was ever faithful to his friends, devoted to his God, and his family. Until his health failed, he seldom missed an opportunity to attend church and was one of its most active members. Such a man is a great loss not only to his family but to the community as well."
