William Montgomery, who passed away February 9, at the Boling Boarding Home in Marshall, where he had been a patient the past five years. Mrs. Raymond Brame played a medley of hymns and accompanied Don Officer who sang "Farther Along", and "In the Garden". Pallbearers were Henry Gabb, George Crawford, Les Venable, Cecil Jones, E.W. Oots, and Roger Haynie. Interment was made in the Slater City Cemetery under the direction of the Haines Funeral Home. John William Montgomery was born on September 7, 1872, in Saline County, Missouri, 7 miles west of Slater. There he resided with his parents, the late Archibald and Hessie Ann Montgomery, until 1882 when they moved to Slater from their farm. As a small boy he attended the Slater school and began work as a helper for his parents, who had purchased a small hotel and boarding house, now occupied by the post office. He also ran errands and worked for the Slater Rustler newspaper. When only ten years old he joined the Christian Church. He remained of this faith until death. To him the satisfaction of being useful to his country, his family, and his friends was all the recompense he expected or wanted. For ten years he had tenderly cared for his invalid wife with love and devotion until his health failed. On October 27, 1897, he was married to Lula May Johnson, of Norton, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Marshall, Missouri. At this time they moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where they resided for one year, and he was employed as motorman for Memphis railways there. In 1898 they returned to Saline County, Missouri, and settled at Blosser, being employed on the old Hesketl Farm. In 1901, they moved to Slater and this had been their home until in 1956 when they moved to Marshall to live with their daughter, Mrs. Charles Turner and husband. For many years he owned and operated the only threshing machine in Saline County. He also owned and operated with his brother, H.C. Montgomery, the old Rock Barn Garage, one of the first garages about town. When it was sold, he again went into the garage business for himself and so continued until 1939. After the death of his wife in 1959, he was confined to the Boling Boarding Home due to failing health and senility. Here he was loved by all and most tenderly. He was one of Slater's most highly respected citizens. To know him was to love him, loyal at all times to his friends and fellow man, tenderly devoted to his family. For many years in the past he held all offices in the Knights of Pythias Lodge. A quiet Christian man, whose kindliness of nature, of honesty, dependability and simple ways, earned for him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, who devoted his life in service to his family, his friends and his God. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by two daughters, Aline Rehbein and Mrs. Ruby Turner, both of Oxnard, California, two sons, Charles B. Montgomery of Napton, Missouri, and Archie A. Montgomery of Slater; one brother, H.C. Montgomery of Slater; also one sister, Arminda Reynolds. He leaves four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. Two grandsons and his wife preceded him in death.
