Read More	Slater Newspaper, Slater, Saline County, Missouri, November 1923 Mrs. Hessie Ann Montgomery, wife of the late Archibald Montgomery, died at her home in west Slater, Monday, after a long illness and much suffering, aged 75 years, 6 months, 9 days. Several years ago while visiting at the home of her son in Memphis, Tennessee, she fell and broke her hip. She was lame from this and much of the time was compelled to use an invalid chair, but has been able to be up and about until a week ago when pneumonia set in. The funeral will be held at the Christian Church, Wednesday afernoon at two thirty o'clock, conducted by the minister, Rev. J. W. Boulton. The burial will be at the city cemetery under the auspices of the Lady Macabees. The passing away of Mrs. Montgomery removes from Slater one of its pioneer citizens, who with her husband, has been closely idenified with the community since the early history of the town. She was a woman of splendid charactor, and with a long record of good deeds to her credit, a faithful member of the Christian Church, being present at all services when able. Deceased was born and reared in Hancock County, Illinois. She married Archibald Montgomery on January 1, 1867, and they moved to Saline County, on a farm about 7 miles west of Slater in 1869. In 1882 the family moved to Slater, which has been their home ever since. For a number of years after moving to Slater, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery operated a boarding house and hotel, one of these hotel sites was on the corner now occupied by the Farmers & Merchants Bank Building. The husband died in 1911. Three sons and two daughters survive this mother, Adolphus of Memphis, Tennessee; John William, Hugh Chapin and Miss Arminda Montgomery and Mrs William Harper (Lillie) all of Slater, three children are dead. Of her family of eleven children, two brothers are living, Jesse Cain of Denver, Illinois, and Adolphus of Plymouth, Illinois. These two brothers and her son of Memphis are here for the funeral. Other relations here are Jesse Howell, a nephew of Carrollton Missouri; Mrs. Susanna Cain, a sister in law of St. Louis, Missouri; Mrs. Amarinthia Woolf, a niece of Sedalia, Missouri; Miss Ruby Montgomery, grandaughter of Minnesota; and Miss Hazel Harper, a grandaughter of Kansas City, Missouri. Hessie Ann was the daughter of Jesse Marion Cain and Hessie Standley.
