Description	:	Arie was the second child born into the farm family of Gerrit and Maria (DeJong) VanDeHaar. There were ten children in this family, others were Elizabeth born 1869, Peter born 1875, Gysbertha born 1876, Cornelius (Neal) born 1878, Everta (Eva) born 1881, Dora 1882, William born 1884, Martinus (Martin) 1886, and Greta born 1887. Arie's parents both came to the United States from the Netherlands. Gerrit came in 1886, and Maria in 1866. There were ten children in this family, others were Elizabeth born 1869, Peter born 1875, Gysbertha born 1876, Cornelius (Neal) born 1878, Everta (Eva) born 1881, Dora 1882, William born 1884, Martinus (Martin) 1886, and Greta born 1887. Arie's parents both came to the United States from the Netherlands. Gerrit came in 1886, and Maria in 1866. She and many of her family members came on the S S England that had a cholera outbreak on the way over. Four from this family died at sea. The others were diverted from New York to Halifax and put off the ship at McNabb's Island. It was still winter with snow and freezing temperatures. They had to burn all their possessions and live in tents and use other supplies sent over from Halifax until they could clean the ship and send it on to New York City. This was a very difficult time for the family. In NY City they were quarantined for two weeks before they were allowed off the ship and could make their way to Iowa where other family had settled. By 1900, when Arie was 18 years old, his parents had passed away and he was head of the household which included brothers Peter, Cornelius and Martin who shared in the farming. Also, two sisters, Dora and Greta, were living with them. When Arie was 37 years old he married Jennie, the 23 year old daughter of William and Gertie (Willemses) Peppel, January 7, 1909 in Mahaska County Iowa. Jennie had come to this country in 1889 at four years old. Her father was a farmer. Arie and Jennie had two children - Gerrit "Gary" born in 1911 who married Gladys DeKock, and died in 2005; Gertrude born 1914 who married Clarence Schroeder and died in 1991. Arie died at 63 years old leaving 49 year old Jennie a widow for 32 years. In later years she lived with her daughter, Gertrude in Pella IA.
