Description	:	William was the son of Maria (DeJong) and Gerrit VandeHaar, who both came to this country from the Netherlands. His mother came in 1866 with her parents and siblings on the S S England that had an outbreak of cholera. Five family members died during the trip. His father came to the United States in 1886. William was the 7th of 10 children. His father was a farmer, and the family lived on several farms in the Black Oak Iowa area. They had horses, cattle, pigs, and chickens. They raised wheat, corn oats, Irish potatoes and hay and made butter, cheese and molasses. They were affiliated with the Reformed Church. William registered for the draft for both WWI and WWII. He was tall, of medium build and had blue eyes and light hair that had turned gray when he registered for WWII. William married Carrie, daughter of Govert and Elizabeth (Van Os) VanZee February 20, 1913 in Mahaska County Iowa. They had nine children - Freda Lucille born 1914, Melvin Dale born 1915, Orin Wilson born 1918, Donald Leroy born 1919, Helen Ethlyn born 1922, Ila Mae born 1925, Ralph Stanley born 1927, Norman Gene born 1929, and Vivian Virginia born 1933. William, Carrie and their children lived on a farm near Mitchellville IA. He was laid to rest at the age of 83.
