Description	:	Martinus was born in Black Oak Township, the son of Gerrit and Maria (nee deJong) VanDerHaar. By this time the last name had been changed to leave off the "r" on De. His mother passed away when he was 2 years old and his father died when he was 13. In 1900, Martin and his brothers, Arie, Peter, Cornelius, and sisters, Dora and Greta were living together and his brothers were farming. His mother passed away when he was 2 years old and his father died when he was 13. In 1900, Martin and his brothers, Arie, Peter, Cornelius, and sisters, Dora and Greta were living together and his brothers were farming. He also had 3 sisters, Elizabeth, Gysbertha and Eva no longer living at this time. Another brother, William, was was not at home. Martin and Alice Grandia were married Feb. 28, 1909. In 1918, they were living in Linneus, Linn MO when Martin registered for the draft for WWI. He was 32 years old of medium built and height and had blue eyes and light hair. Martin did general farming in Clay, Polk IA and then in Linneus, Linn, MO. He and Alice had four children, Pearl L. born Sep. 16, 1910 in MO, Lester M. born Oct. 10, 1914 in MO, Harrold born Jan. 2, 1918 in MO, and Leonard Gary born Jan. 6, 1922. Lester and Harrold both served in WWII. Lester was a Private in the Army Infantry, National Guard, enlisting Feb. 10, 1941 in Des Moines, IA. Harrold was a Sergeant in the 78th Recon Troop in Altoona IA, 78th Division and served in the European Theater.
