He attended Beloit grade and high school and St. Benedict's College in Atchison, Kansas. He moved to Glasco in 1902 and after learning the barber business under James Olmstead, he and his brother, Bill, established the Klein Brothers Barber Shop, where he stayed until January, 1944, when illness forced his retirement after 40 years of business in Glasco. In 1911 he was united in marriage to Ellen R. Hurley, and to this union five children were born, a daughter and son having proceeded him in death. Eleanor Sylvestra died in infancy, Feb. 5, 1915, and John Nicholas was killed in action over France, in World War II on June 20, 1944. He was active in civic affairs and business and especially interested in sports, being a member of the famous Glasco Town Team, football team of 1902 and a member of the widely known basketball team of the Glasco Athletic Club, which played many college teams and participated in the first basketball tournament in the State of Kansas, held in the old auditorium in 1909. He was a devoted member of the St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Glasco and was zealous in applying high principles in his business and to his friends. He was especially devoted to his family and home. During his younger days he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. His cheerfulness and patience has been in high regard during these four years of illness, never complaining, even in the consciousness of his last days. He is survived by his wife and three sons: Gail of Kansas City and Ray and Max of Glasco. Two grandsons, Gregory and John Marcus of Kansas City. Three brothers: Leo, of Kansas City, Bill of Guymon, Okla,; and Max of Wichita, Kans. Three sisters: Ella Spaulding of Glasco, Frances Keller and Marie Gorsuch of Clyde, Kans.. Another sister, Anna Schmitz died on June 1, 1938. Also a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, April 6, at 9:30 in the St. Mary's church. The Rev. Father Brown of Belleville said mass, and an inspiring sermon. Hymns were sung by the St. Mary's choir, with a solo, "What Could My Jesus Do More?" by Robert Pitner and a duet "Veni" by Evelyn Lavy and Genevieve LaBarge. Interment was made in the St. Mary's cemetery where he lies by his son and daughter and parents. Pallbearers were Paul Butler, James Butler, LaVerne Spaulding, Lawrence Hurley, Paul Klein, Harold Schmitz. Flower bearers were Guy Nowels and Max Martin. Griffith Funeral Home was in charge. A large number of relatives and friends came to pay tribute to his years of friendship and the many flowers and spiritual bouquets and food, showering a message of love and sympathy to his family.
