DAVIS PASSED AWAY LAST MONDAY ---------- THE HARLAN COUNTY JOURNAL, Alma, Nebraska Thursday, July 20, 1939 page 1 column 1 ---------- Mr. Davis Was One Of Pioneer Residents Arthur Clarence Davis, son of John W. (Jonas Hoven) and Anneta Davis, was born in Little River, Wisconsin, August 7, 1866, and passed away at his home in Alma, Nebraska, July 17, 1939. His mother passed away when he was only two and one-half years old. He made his home with his aunt until he came to Fillmore County, Nebraska, as a young man. Here he met and afterwards married Miss Anna Ondrak, June 8, 1890. To this union were born nine children. In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Davis moved to Harlan County, Nebraska. Since February, 1916, they have resided at Alma. Most of the time he lived in this county he was engaged in the managing of a meat and grocery store. Mr. Davis had a very cheerful disposition, a pleasing personality and made many friends. He loved his home and was a devoted husband. He became a member of the Methodist church when a small boy and tried to govern his life by Christian principles. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Addie Hess, and one son, John Joseph. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, five daughters, Nettie Neubauer of Orleans, Nebr.; Mayme Strayer of McCook; Sadie Longsine of Stamford, Nebr.; Nellie Henderson of Rock Island, Ill.; Addie Calkins of Alma; three sons, Charles, Frank and Arnold, of Alma, Nebraska; a brother Charles C. Davis of Maywood, California; and many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Christian Church, in this city. Burial in the Alma Cemetery.
