When he was a boy, Queen Victoria wanted 5,000 school children to sing at a special celebration. Arthur was one of them. He won books for his scholarship which he treasured and carried with him for many years. When Arthur was sixteen, missionaries came to their door. They told Arthur, his father, Henry Lewis, and his brother's, John and James, about a city growing up in the Mountains of a land across the ocean. It was a city of peace, a city where men and women could learn about a living God, a city where people could live their convictions. It was then that Arthur's family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The family was poor, but they wanted to send someone to help build Zion in Salt Lake City. Before Arthur left his home, his father told him he had two older sisters who died before Arthur was born. Arthur packed his carpetbag with his few earthly possessions and said goodbye. Our family doesn’t have the details of his leaving home, where he made connections for a ship or much about his voyage to America or arrival here. I’ve always thought about the courage he had to draw from within, staring up at the huge vessel and wondering where it would take him, how it would even float with the weight of his family's expectations and all the future generations of his family on his shoulders. He was still a boy, alone and without prospects, yet his commitment and his faith were greater than his fear. Everywhere he went, Arthur was singing. He had a beautiful voice and the sailors loved to hear him sing. During the voyage, the sailors noticed Arthur wasn't eating. The ship had a store of what they called "ship's biscuits," to pull them through a rainy day. If Arthur had a rainy day, this was it. The voyage would last three weeks and he couldn't go that long without eating, so a sailor dumped everything out of his carpetbag and filled his bag with hard baked biscuits. Arthur kept more than himself alive on the sailor's generosity. He later said, “There were a lot of fellows who were hungry.” When Arthur Lewis arrived in Salt Lake City, it was 1882. The Tabernacle organ had been installed for fifteen years in the Tabernacle on temple square, but the temple was still under construction. John Taylor, the same who was present when Joseph Smith was martyred, and Brigham Young's successor, was prophet, seer and revelator of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Arthur still carried ships biscuits in his carpet bag when he had arrived in Zion in one piece. He walked down the side-walk singing, "This Ellen Riley they speak of so highly, how do you do, Ellen Riley, you're looking quite well." It was an old song for a new land. The woman in front of him turned and said, "My name is Ellen Riley." As it happened, Ellen Riley was the wife of the Bishop of the Sixth Ward and she took Arthur home with her where her husband hired Arthur to drive his big wagons. At the Sixth Ward, Arthur met and married Rosalie Theodora Nielsen from Copenhagen, Denmark, July 13, 1887. Arthur discovered he was very talented at making things grow. He took charge of all the greenhouses in the western part of Salt Lake City (three or four blocks). Whenever there was a wedding or funeral, Arthur made beautiful sprays and arrangements as a tribute. Arthur built a home. After working twelve hours a day at the greenhouses, he would come home, take his babies in his arms and sing them to sleep while Rosalie fixed a meal. Twelve children eventually blessed their home: Maybelle, Elise, Ethel, Clarence, John, Hazel, Ernest, Lionel, Grace, June, Roger, and Emery. Arthur's father, Henry Lewis came from England to live with them. At that time, the diphtheria epidemic came to Salt Lake City and the family was quarantined. The authorities burned Arthur's books that he had won at school and prized all his life. Arthur received a letter from John in England saying he was being trained to ride camels in the Sahara. England had gone to war, the Boer War, in South Africa. John had two children at the time, John H. and Lilian C. John wrote to say they didn't know where James was, he had left home. Arthur never heard from his brothers John and James again. Arthur mourned that John had died in the Boer War. When Arthur was forty, his family was too big for the small house he had built. He about an opportunity in the desert country to the south called Catalappa, where a consortium from Salt Lake City were growing cantaloupe. Once again Arthur moved his family to Nevada. When they arrived, the land was barren compared with the mountain city they loved. Rosalie thought her heart would break at first. It was so dry. There was hardly any rain. Arthur's oldest daughters, Mabel and Ethel sat down and cried. Ernest, who was nine said, "Are we ever going back to the United States?" The family lived in a big tent with a wooden floor. They had their furniture. When Rosalie was 43, she had a miscarriage and a stroke which paralyzed most of her body. It was hard on Arthur to see his beautiful wife suffer, but she had a sense of humor, and made the best of it. She got down on her hands and knees and swept the floor with a whisk broom. She could make a cake by holding a saucepan between her knees. When the rains came in 1910, the Muddy River swelled beyond its banks. A 100 year flood gouged its way through the Moapa Valley and wiped out Catalappa and the melon enterprise. It froze over after the waters subsided and there was a foot of mud all over the land, so the boys took their ice skates and skated on mud. After the flood the authorities dug a deep ditch to take care of the floods. Arthur developed a condition they didn't know anything about at the time. All the acid was gone from his stomach. He couldn't eat. He was so sick, he couldn't sing. Arthur died March 24, 1945. The stroke left Rosalie's tongue paralyzed. She had difficulty speaking for forty-one years. She was eighty-four when she died, December 11, 1950.
