The cemetery in which seven of the eight Bierbaum babies are buried was established in Garnavillo, Clayton County, Iowa in 1844. With time it became known as Old Cemetery/Old Town Cemetery/Old City Cemetery. At one time all lots were taken, the cemetery covered with stones. Problems: No record of burials, if even kept, was preserved. Through the years many stones fell and became earthen-covered. Others were displaced from their original sites. In 1974 Mr. and Mrs. Arnold D. Roggman of Garnavillo undertook recording data from stones, even probing for fallen ones. Noted was those covered with earth were better preserved than those above ground subjected to weather and erosion. Of 312 stones documented, it was determined 40% represented children under ten years of age. This included the Bierbaum babies, each of whose stones, we are fortunate, did remain. We must commend Johann Christoph Bierbaum and wife Florentine for faithfully providing a quality memorial marker for each deceased child. Years ago, wanting to do justice records-wise to the brief lives of the Bierbaum babies, my task as a researcher was to locate documentation of births and deaths. This was achieved with determination (and frustration remedied with chocolate). Records in German were in different area churches in registers not always chronological. When found, some church documentation differed from engraving on stones and/or the 1974 reading of nature-tampered stones. Today, ancestry.com wonderfully has digitized Clayton County church records, but we must be mindful of transcriptions. Example: Sussana (aka Susanna) is transcribed Lussana with her month of birth transcribed January. The record in German provides Juni. Juni in German is June. Drawing upon all sources, provided for you here for your own file/tree is documentation for each baby noting discrepancies. Provided, too, is a transcription of engraving on each child's stone to the degree it remained decipherable in the 1980s. At that time, viewing the overall Bierbaum plot, Ludwig, Wilhelm/William and August were buried in a row. August's stone, however, was displaced and propped against a tree. In a row behind the foregoing were Jobst, John and Anna with John's stone displaced but leaning against Anna's. About six feet behind Jobst's stone was the fallen, partial stone for Susanna, sod-covered except for three square inches.
