Manchester, one of the best known men in the county, died last Friday morning at his home on the Canfield-Salem road in Green township, death resulting from paralysis. About seven years ago Mr. Manchester was seriously injured about the head in a runaway accident, but from this he apparently recovered. Early the past summer, however, he suffered from severe pains in his head and he went to Cleveland and consulted a specialist who found that a clot of blood had formed on the brain and that nothing could be done for the patient. Paralysis followed and for several weeks Mr. Manchester was unconscious most of the time until death came to his relief. The deceased was a son of Robert and Sarah Manchester, pioneer residents of Canfield township, and was born on a farm half a mile north of Toot's Corners, Dec. 25, 1852, consequently was in the 60th year of his age. He attended the Dublin school and later the Canfield high school. During his early manhood he taught school in neighboring townships for several years and then took up farming, which he made his life work, in this he was very successful and not only owned a fine farm in Green township but one in Goshen. Last spring he purchased the Calvin property on Court street in Canfield and expected to leave the farm this fall and move to the village. For years he was a member of the board of county fair managers and for the past 15 years was secretary of the society, and a most efficient officer he was. He also served many years as a trustee of Green township. He was married in 1873 to Miss Rebecca Bowman of Ellsworth, who survives him together with three daughters, Mrs. Floyd Hunt of Canfield, Mrs. F. H. Williams (Nora) and Miss Hazel at home. He also leaves one brother, D. L. Manchester, of Youngstown. Funeral services were held from the family residence Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and were largely attended. Rev. Robert E. Pugh, pastor of Canfield and Concord Presbyterian churches, officiated. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, giving silent testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The remains were taken to Salem and laid to rest in Grandview cemetery."
