Company D under command of Lieutennant Ross had charge of the escort which conducted the remains from the home of his parents to the Armory and from there to the cemetery. Drees were held at the Armory Thursday afternoon. Company D under command of Lieutennant Ross had charge of the escort which conducted the remains from the home of his parents to the Armory and from there to the cemetery. The large hall was well filled there being nearly a thousand present to witness the simple but impressive cermonies. As the remains were brought into the hall, J.J. Rohner played a dirge on the piano. At the conclusion of which Captain C.C. Helmer delivered a beautiful tribute to the dead soldier which is published below in full. While the cermonies were being performed Sergeant J.H. McClellan of Co. D and Sergeant McCullough of the U.S. regular army stood at the head and the foot of the casket at present arms. The casket was draped in the national colors. After the address by Captain Helmer, Lambert Rohner rendered the beautiful solo "Remember Me" at the conclusion of which the casket was opened and the many friends were given an opportunity of viewing the remains. The company then escorted the body to the cemetery. Here the last sad rites were performed and a military salute of three volleys were fired over the grave. Bugler Seyller sounded "taps" and the grave was closed over the remains of one who was deeply mourned by relativs and many friends. The pallbearers were Sergeant L.J. Drees, Sergeant Clayton Strohm, Corporal T.J. Drees and privates John Drees, Andrew Drees and Earl Crackling. The floral offerings were very beautiful and were expressive of the young life that came to so untimely an end. The following touching and appropriate speech was delivered at the Armory by Captain C.C. Helmer. "Lieutenant Franklin H. Drees, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Drees was born March 3rd, 1881 at Carroll, Iowa and died May 20th 1911 at Washington, D. C. His early life was spent in Carroll where he received his early education in the schools of the city. Later he attended Union College at Schenectedy New York where for two year he pursued a course in civil engineering after which he completed a course in structural engineering at Leland Stanford University, California. He then entered a three year term in the civil service department of the United States in the Philippines as Second Assistant Engineer with headquarters at Manila. He quickly rose to the position of First Assistant Engineer and during the latter part of his term performed the duties and assumed the responsibilities of Chief Engineer. During his service at Manila he was so constantly brought in contact with the men of the army that it was but natural that he should seek a commission in the regular service, and it was with little difficulty, on account of his excellent record in the civil department, that he succeeded in securring an appointment as Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He then returned to the United States and took the examination for his commission. His examination was so excellent that it attracted wide attention, and was even commented on in the daily press, it being reported at the time that no other had ever received such high grades for a similar examination for a like position, and although he was at first rejected on account of some trifling physicial defect, yet on account of his excelent examination record he was admitted and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in February 1908. He saw service in the United States, Cuba, Panama and the Philippine Islands. In November 1910 he was promoted First Lieutenant and stationed at Washington Barracks. The records at the headquarters of the Marine Corps at Washington show that Lieutenant Franklin H. Drees was one of the most promising of the younger officers in the service and had stood at the head of his class in examinations for promotions. His last examination was pronounced as marvelous and absolutely faultless and the different government bureaus at Washington acknowledge his worth to the government. It is not without a distinct feeling of sadness and loss that we close the record of this young life. He had just recently completed the preparatory stage of life, and successfully entered upon the larger field of active manhood's years. His early preparation was so thorough and complete, that there seems little doubt that but for the sad calamity which has overtaken him, he would have attained high rank in his countries service. He was diligent and energetic giving unsparingly of his time to those things which demanded it and although his life was short he had accomplished much. He leaves three sisters besides his parents to mourn his death. The life of a soldier in the service of his country even in times of peace is neither a royal road to wealth nor a flowery bed of ease. It is a school — an unending series of education and preparation for the great conflicts of the future in which he may be engaged. It is an unceasing round of study drill and discipline. Without this drill and discipline a body of men though fully equipped and armed with the latest instruments of destruction becomes a mob. With it, it becomes an army, a fighting machine all subject to the absolute will and control of its commander......"
