Bernard Rex Erickson, 93, was killed when he was struck by an eastbound Burlington Northern freight train at 3:24 a.m. The unidentified conductor on the train told the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department that when he saw Erickson, it was to late to stop the train. Ericson, 93, of Lockridge, who died Friday, March 10, 1989, at Lockridge, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Grant Lapham of the Lockridge Baptist Church officiating. Interment with military honors will be in White Oak Cemetery north of Rome. Visitation will begin at noon Monday with the family present 7-8:30 p.m.. Memorials have been established Lockridge Baptist church and White Oak Cemetery. Ericson was born Nov. 4, 1895, the son of Henry F. and Lillian A. Lloyd Ericson. On July 3, 1917, he married Nellie E. Scarff in Trenton. She died July 23, 1980. He farmed west of Mount Pleasant and in the White Oak area before moving to Lockridge. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was a member of American Legion Post No. 58 at Mount Pleasant. Survivors include two sons, Ralph T. of Lockridge H. Edward of Marshalltown; five daughters, Mae Stutzman of Lockridge, Betty Barr of Mount Pleasant, Grace Thompson of Salem, Evelyn Weiter of Largo, Fla. and Donna Luzadder of Lockridge; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 14, 1989, from the Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Grant Lapham of the Lockridge Baptist Church officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in White Oak Cemetery, north of Rome. Visitation will be at the Weir Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today.
