They had farmed near Binford since. He leaves Mrs. Overby; three sons, Hans and Albin of Binford and Leonard of Cooperstown; six daughters, Mrs. Henry Hagle, Mrs. Hazel King, Mrs. Siegfried Hagle and Mrs. Raymond Watne of Binford, Mrs. Theodore Nelson of Cooperstown and Mrs. Clarence Haakenson, McHenry, N.D.; a brother Christ of Binford; a sister, Mrs. Betsy Rendahl, N.D.; 36 grandchldren and five great-grandchildren. Ben Hans Overby was born in the year 1873 on January 25, in Norway, near Gjovick. Mr. and Mrs. Hans Overby, the parents of Ben Hans, left Norway and sailed for America when Ben was one and one half years old. The first land they took up in this state was a homestead south of Binford on section 12, Bryan township. Their home and barn were built of sod. Their provisions were obtained in Cooperstown. At times they were lost in storms, and were forced to get out on their hands and knees and crawl around until they found the hard track again. They often took kerosene lamps along on these trips to use in the darkness or in case they got lost. The kerosene sometimes froze and then they could not light them. Because of this they carried a bottle of oil in their pocket and due to the heat of the body the kerosene would not freeze. One time Mr. Overby got lost in a storm so bad that he lost his way. When he knew that he was lost he turned the wagon box upside down and camped there overnight. Mr. Overby was unsuccessful in raising a crop the first five years he farmed, however, the sixth year a good crop was raised but a hail storm swept the country and destroyed it entirely. Buffalo hunting was a great incident of that time although Mr. Overby never took part. He picked the bones and hauled them to Cooperstown where they were sold for $16 a ton. On May 5, 1904, Mr. Overby was married to Miss Larson in Cooperstown. Soon afterward the moved to Rosendal township, section 12. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Overby. They are Mrs. Henry Hagle of Binford, Mrs. Clarence Haakenson of McHenry, Hazel, Hans, Sigfred, Leonard, Clara, Alma and Albin all of Mose. Contributed by Dennis C. Olson
