Thus passes from our midst another pioneer woman. Deceased was born in Vardahl, Norway on July 11, 1860, having reached the age of 68 years, nine months and 2 days at her death. She emigrated to America in 1874 and settled near Northfield, Minnesota. On June 21, 1881, she was united in marriage to John P. Vangen, with whom she came to Griggs county and homesteaded. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom survive. They are Paul, Hans, Mrs. Bertha Nelson, Anton, Christian, John and Marie, all making their home here. Besides the immediate family, deceased has five brothers and four sisters. The brothers are Andrew Overby, Ben Overby, Christ Overby, Andas Overby, of Binford and Nels Overby, who lives in Norway. Her sisters are Mrs. Ole Lockran, Northfield, Minnesota, Mrs. Tom Randahl, benedict, N. Dak., Mrs. John Johnson, Glenfield, N. Dak., and Mrs. Louis Williams, Lake Williams, N. Dak. Sixteen grand children and three great grand children survive. Impressive funeral services were held on Wednesday from the home at 1:00 o'clock and from Trinity Lutheran church at 2:00 o'clock the services being conducted by Rev. M. B. Ordahl. At this service two selections were rendered by the male quartet, who sang "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Oh, Sweetly Solemn Thought." Mrs. Ordahl, sang as a solo a favorite hymn of the deceased "Saet mig saa Jeg ser dig, Jesus." The church was becomingly decorated, the plants and bouquets being furnished through the kindness of friends and members of the ladies aid. The floral offerings were many and very pretty. The church was filled to the doors with sorrowing friends of the departed one. The remains were taken to the cemetery west of town where burial was made.
