The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 14 June 1944 Well Known Loma Resident Passed Away Here Saturday Mrs. Bertha LeFurgey, a Chouteau county resident for the past thirty years, died Saturday in St. Clare hospital in this city. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Howard Smith, and interment was in Riverside cemetery in the family plot. Mrs. LeFurgey was known to a large number of people in the Loma and Fort Benton area where she had made her home for many years. She has visited occasionally with relatives in Idaho and stayed with members of her family at different times. For the past three months she had been at the local hospital, but had not been seriously sick. Last Tuesday she suffered a stroke of paralysis and did not regain consciousness. There are many friends of the family in this county who will mourn the passing of Mrs. LeFurgey who endeared herself to people because of her kindly disposition. Bertha Ober was born May 9, 1868, near West Union, Iowa. At the time of her death she had just passed her 76th milestone. In her childhood she lived with her parents, Elijah and Wealthy Ober, until her mother's death. At that time she went to live with relatives until her marriage to Homer LeFurgey on Feb. 18, 1886. Mr. and Mrs. LeFurgey continued to live in Iowa and then moved to Tennessee and later to Oklahoma City. The family came to Montana in 1914, Mr. LeFurgey purchasing land in the Loma section. They made that their home until his death in 1932 and she continued to live in Loma and in this city for most of the time since. There were eleven children born to the LeFurgeys. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. Frank Papan, Cascade; Mrs. Robert Gipe and Mrs. Lee Beatty, both of Great Falls; two sons, Howard and William of Loma. Six children, two boys and four girls, preceded her in death, all having reached adult life but one daughter at the time of their passing. There are 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Craft, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Winnie Shepherd, Johnson, Kansas.
