It is now called Fort Lewis and is located between Tacoma and Olympia.) Bessie was there preceding going to France. She was able to visit her sister, Emma, in Asotin county, Washington. (Ida Walters Saunders) ~OBIT: Miss Bessie Mae McCann Funeral Services for Miss Bessie Mae McCann, aged 40 years, who died Friday, August 3, in Denver, Colo., where she made her home, will be held Wednesday at 2:30 o'clock from the North Lawrence Christian church. Rev. S.B.Braden will be in charge and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. She is survived by four brothers and four sisters. OBIT: Miss Bessis McCann Funeral services for Miss Bessie McCann, who died August 4 at Denver, Colo., were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the North Lawrence Christian church. The Rev. S. B. Braden officiated and burial was in Memorial Park, Cemetery. Liberty Post of the American Legion had charge of services at the grave and a salute was fired by rifle squad from Haskell Institute. Pall bearers were Joe Brooks, John Snow, Ray Hodge, William Leford, O. Owens and Eddie Moranville. BIO: 8-15-28 Letter from Jessie Fearing Hopkins to niece, Olive Green Walter. It tells about the death of Bessie Mae Fearing McCann in Denver on August 4, 1928. "This is a sad story .. not only from the standpoint of her loving Fearing family .. but also from the perspective of her fiance, Larry Hanson. They were soon to be married, and they expected to be in Lawrence by September 3. ---------- A Seamstress was making a beautiful dress for the trousseau .. light green chiffon over a pink satin slip with pink chiffon roses at the shoulder. Instead, Jessie was buried in this dress she liked so well. Kind nurse friends paid to have the dress completed for the funeral. Jessie and Larry were not to ride through Lawrence in a new Victory Six. There was only to be a funeral procession. ----------- Bessie Fearing served her country as an Army nurse. During World War I she served in France. She was evidently working at the Army hospital in Denver at the time of her death. Her brother, Will (William Bell), made his career with the U.S.Army. These two siblings served their country as their father, William G. Fearing, had done before them. Bessie was at one time married to Frank McCann. BIO: Bessie Mae Fearing was born August 12, 1888 in Wakarusa Twnshp, Douglas County, Kansas. Bessie Mae was the daughter of William and Mary Fearing. Bessie Mae served during WWI as a nurse. In 1918 she served in France. A picture shows her wearing her uniform with the Cross-of-Lorraine patch. "Nice France 1918" was written on the back of the picture. Bessie held the rank of 1st Lt. She served as a nurse after WWI at the Fitzsimmons Army hospital in Denver, Colorado, she was to marry again she died from a blood clot in her heart following surgery for appendicitis. A letter from Jessie Hannah Fearing telling of Bessie's death was sent to her nieces and nephews. The letter contained a description of the wedding dress Bess was going to wear at her wedding. Bessie Mae Fearing was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence, KA. Liberty Post of the American Legion had charge of services at the grave and a salute was fired by a rifle squad from Haskell Institute. Bessie Mae Fearing was buried with full Military Honors for her service in WWI. Unfortunately military records of WWI were lost. Also records for women during this period are very few even though thirty thousand women served. At least Bessie was honored by her home town. (Larry M. Brizendine May 2005)
