Description	:	O’BRIEN, BESSIE RACHEL—Bessie Rachel O’Brien was born June 24, 1918, to Frank and Minnie (Eberhardt) Madison in Madison township, Geneva, Nebraska. She passed away on July 21, 2009, at Fairview Manor at the age of 92 years and 28 days. Bessie was one of 14 children, one of which died in infancy. Read More	O’BRIEN, BESSIE RACHEL—Bessie Rachel O’Brien was born June 24, 1918, to Frank and Minnie (Eberhardt) Madison in Madison township, Geneva, Nebraska. She passed away on July 21, 2009, at Fairview Manor at the age of 92 years and 28 days. Bessie was one of 14 children, one of which died in infancy. Bessie attended Fillmore County School District No. 2 through the eighth grade. Bessie married Bernard John O’Brien on June 24, 1937, at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, Grafton. To this union, two daughters were born, Madeline Grace “Lyn” and Charlene Marie. Bernard and Bessie resided on Fillmore county farms until 1960, when they moved to Fairmont. Bessie was employed at Standard Brands (egg plant) in York for 22 years, Palmer Inn in York for three and one-half years, and Fairview Manor Nursing home in Fairmont for 13 years. Bessie was one of the first persons to be employed at the new nursing home and continued her work as the housekeeping supervisor until her retirement in 1986. Bessie was a member of St. Helena’s Catholic Church at Grafton, a member of the St. Helena’s Altar Society and a member of the Fairmont Senior Center, where she thoroughly enjoyed spending much of her time and helping out with the center’s activities. Bessie was a loving and devoted wife, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She took great pride in her housekeeping and cooking and will be remembered for her wonderful homemade pies, especially lemon meringue and raisin. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Bessie is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Minnie; husband, Bernard, in 1982; daughter, Charlene, in 1946; sisters, Florence Brust, Alice Smisek, Hazel Ladman, Alta Ebbeka, Bertha Hlina, Lula Little and Hilda Casburn; brothers, Clarence, George, Thomas, Ralph and Harve Madison. Bessie is survived by daughter, Madeline Grace “Lyn” and husband, John Lowe; grandchildren Teresa Marie (Kim) Johnson; Timothy John (Regena) Lowe, and Jane Celeste (Dean) Irwin; great-grandchildren, Celeste (Brian) Sexton, Timothy Michael Sieber, and Nina Nichole Sieber, Jordan, Madison and Cameron Lowe; and Jack and Rory Irwin; great-great-granddaughter, Bridget Ava Sexton(to arrive soon); step-great-grandchildren, Krystal Johnson and special friend, Dick Hagen, Amanda (Mike) Nohavec, Porsche Johnson and fiancé Frank “Eddy” Matejka III and Phillip Irwin; step-great-great-grandchildren, Cole Johnson and Harley Hagen, Ben and Garrett Nohavec and Frank Matejka IV. A funeral mass to celebrate her life was held on July 27 at St. Helena’s Catholic Church in Grafton with Father William Holoubek officiating. The organist was Nancy Jo Galusha and she accompanied soloist Jane Irwin, who sang “You Are Mine” and “Ave Maria.” She also accompanied the congregation in the singing of “How Great Thou Art,” and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” Pallbearers were Timothy J. Lowe, Dean Irwin, Kim Johnson, Timothy M. Sieber, Brian Sexton and Jerald Snodgrass. Burial was at the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal August 5th, 2009 page 10.
