Description	:	Betha May Kristiansen died peacefully on June 9 2012 at her home in Palm Coast Florida where she had resided for 2 years. She had lived in Sacramento for over 20 years prior to her move. She was born August 26, 1925 in Wenatchee WA, the 6th of 13 children of Alma A. McCombs and Glena P. (Campbell) McCombs. Read More	Betha May Kristiansen died peacefully on June 9 2012 at her home in Palm Coast Florida where she had resided for 2 years. She had lived in Sacramento for over 20 years prior to her move. She was born August 26, 1925 in Wenatchee WA, the 6th of 13 children of Alma A. McCombs and Glena P. (Campbell) McCombs. She married on Jan 8 1943, Lester James Olds in Spokane WA. They were the parents of three daughters, Leslie, Connie and Barbara. On Jan 30 1959, Les was killed in a work-related accident, leaving her a young widow at age 33. Within 2 months she enrolled in college at Eastern Washington College, graduating in 1963. She married Arvid Kenneth Kristiansen on Nov 24 1961 in Spokane. He was a young widower with three small daughters, Kathy, Brenda and Cindy. Betha raised the girls as her own. The family moved to Colorado where she earned her Master's degree in Special Education. In 1965 the family moved to Livermore, California where Arvid and Betha adopted their son, Raymond in 1971. While in Livermore, Betha taught school for many years, touching the lives of her special needs hard-of-hearing students. But she was needed to help run her husband's business, so ,after about 10 years, she quit teaching and ran their companies, Kris' Truck Decking and Kris' Truck Transport until retirement. Upon retirement they moved to Sacramento County about 1988 living in Rio Linda briefly before settling in their home on Claire Ave. She was not content to sit still in her retirement. She sold real estate and she worked for the census bureau. As a volunteer, she taught English as a second language to many Southeast Asians. S She and Arvid offered part of their land for the use of her students to grow a garden of their familiar vegetables. She and Arvid served a mission to Nova Scotia in 1989-1990 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, of which she had been a life-time member. Before and after her mission she served in many capacities in her church, the service bringing her much joy. Betha nursed and cared for Arvid in his last months. He died on Oct 31 1997 at their home in Sacramento. The following year she was on another mission for her church, this time in Bangkok, Thailand where she taught English to teachers so that they could teach to it their students. She loved the adventures she had in the 18 months that she was in Thailand. She was a very successful business woman at a time when that was unusual. She was visionary in seeing what could be done with a budding business or a piece of land to be developed or a person to be helped to flourish. She also loved her teaching. She was always teaching even in informal situations. She taught the value of work and being self-reliant. She taught her children to be responsible and accountable. She gardened and canned and froze the fruits and vegetables that she grew. She made bread for her family. She was frugal and knew how to budget her resources to gain the most from all facets of life. She sewed most of the dresses of her girls as they grew up. She loved to travel, especially by car and there were many times that she would get in her car and travel from coast-to-coast or somewhere in between, usually taking at least one child with her. She was a fearless and determined and an in-charge person. In her last years she was stricken with Parkinson's disease and lost some of the abilities to function as she once had, but she never lost the need to serve and to teach. She also never lost her optimism about the future and indicated the many things she would like to do if only her health permitted. She affected the lives of many friends and associates who mourn her passing. It was because of her disease that she moved to Florida to be near one of her daughters, otherwise she would have remained in her beloved California. In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was predeceased by her sisters, Alma Ward and Audrey Stecker and her brothers, Dee, Bill, Pete and Doug McCombs. She was also predeceased by grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Benjamin, Poul and Karin Thomsen. She is survived by her sister, Glena Hoffman and her brothers, Dick, Cal, Andy and Roger McCombs. She is also survived by her children, Leslie (John) Vaughn, Connie Thomsen, Barbara (Albert) Marcotte, Kathy Kristiansen, Brenda (Ken) Lightsey, Cindy (Ken) Huxley and Raymond (Angela) Kristiansen. She leaves 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren to mourn her passing. Services will be at the Notomas Ward building of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints at 761 Rio Terra Ave Sacramento, CA on June 19, 2014. Burial will be at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes
