April 5, 1829 to William Hayford in Spafford, Onondaga County New York (per: "Spafford [N.Y.] Mortuary Records with Genealogical Notes"). William was a tinsmith and a merchant. Children: Asenath, Myron, Orrin and Almeda (who married a Mr. Warner of Tully, Onondaga Co. New York). d. 1891 in Onondaga Co. New York Buried: Tully Cemetery, in Tully, Onondaga Co. New York, next to her husband William Hayford (1809-1889), and their son Orrin Hayford (1834-May 11, 1849). (Orrin died at the age of 15 years, 5 months and 27 days). ---------------------------- 2. Elizabeth ("Eliza") French. b. May 15, 1812 in New York State. m. Jan. 12, 1837. First wife of Benjamin Hayford, of Borodino, Onondaga County New York. Benjamin was a Baptist minister and a farmer. They had three children (per "Spafford [N. Y.] Mortuary Records and Genealogical Notes", by Onondaga [Co.] Historical Association). Ch: Lucinda, William and Pam Hayford. Note: They had another son named B. Franklin, who died at four years of age (per Benjamin's obituary). d. June 24, 1846 in Onondaga County New York. After Eliza died, Benjamin Hayford married Mercy French (1822-1858) (the sister of his 1st wife Eliza). After Mercy died, Benjamin married Mrs. Loretta ("Lottie") M. Baker, who died Aug. 5, 1895, at the age of 66. Buried: "Eliza" is buried in the Borodino Cemetery, in Spafford, Onondaga County New York, next to her husband Benjamin and his two other wives, Mercy (her sister), and Lottie. ---------------------------------- 3. Titus Thayer French Jr. b. Nov. 24, 1814 (probably in Hague, Warren Co. N.Y.). m. No, he never married. Titus Jr. lived with his brother Samuel French and family. After his brother Samuel died in 1892, the 1900 census shows "Thais" (Titus) French [Jr.], age 85, as an "Uncle", living in LaGrange, Cass County Michigan with Berry and Alice Darling (possibly the son of his sister Melissa). d. 1903 Buried: Howe Cemetery, near his parents. ------------------------------- 4. Samuel French. b. May 18, 1818 in Hague, Warren County New York, and he was reared and educated there. m. # 1. Jan. 18, 1843, in Truxton, Cortland Co. New York, to Sarah E. Bliss, the daughter of Peter Bliss Sr. and his wife Mary "Molly" Perry. Samuel and Sarah then located near Borodino, Onondaga County New York, upon a farm within a short distance from her childhood. (Sarch E. was born in Truxton, Cortland County New York, on Dec. 22, 1810 and she died near Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan on Nov. 11, 1857). Samuel and Sarah had seven children (listed under his wife Sarah E. French). They moved to Buchanan, Berrien Co. Michigan in 1853 or 1854 and lived across the road from Sarah's sister Polly (Bliss) Howe (and her husband Frederick Howe Sr.), on a farm of one hundred and fifty acres. Samuel added to this farm, until at the time of his death, he owned three hundred and fifty-five acres of valuable land. Note: Samuel's parents and some of his siblings moved to Buchanan, Michigan two years later, in 1856. Samuel was a member of the Presbyterian church, where he was an elder and a trustee. He was a prominent member of the Berrien County Grange, and he served on the Howe School Board. After Samuel's wife Sarah died on Nov. 11, 1857, Samuel was then married in 1858, to # 2. Mrs. Mercy J. Barnard Wheadon. d. Samuel died on Feb. 7, 1892 in Bertrand Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan. Samuel in buried in the Howe Cemetery near his two wives, Sarah E. and Mercy J. See Samuel's memorial, on this web site. -------------------------------- 5. Benjamin French. b. May 7, 1819, in Hague, Warren Co. New York. d. Oct. 11, 1822 (about 3 1/2 years of age), (probably in Hague, Warren Co. N. Y.). ------------------------------- 6. Zeba French. b. March 9, 1821, in Hague, Warren Co. New York. d. April 20, 1821 (at one month & 11 days), (probably in Hague, Warren Co. N. Y.). ------------------------------- 7. Mercy French. b. Aug. 31, 1822, in Hague, Warren Co. New York. m. Oct. of 1846, the 2nd wife of Benjamin Hayford of Borodino, Onondaga Co. New York [formerly the husband of her sister Elizabeth ("Eliza")]. (Benjamin's 3rd wife was Lottie M. Baker, who died Aug. 5, 1895, age 66), (per "Spafford [N.Y.] Mortuary Records with Genealogical Notes", by Onondaga [Co.] Historical Association). (They were living in Spafford, Onondaga Co. N.Y. in the 1850 census). Mercy and Benjamin had two sons: C. D. Hayford and Orrin Hayford. d. Mercy died on Aug. 20, 1858 in Onondaga Co. N. Y. Buried: Borodino Cemetery, in Spafford, Onondaga County New York, next to her husband Benjamin and his two other wives, her sister Elizabeth ("Eliza"), and Lottie. --------------------------------- 8. Cyrus C. French. b. Oct. 13, 1825, in Hague, Warren County New York. Occupation: hardware store. m. Jan. 20, 1850, to Nancy A. Ryan, in Marcellus, New York. Children: (1.) William W. French. b.1851-d. July 6, 1910 in Dryden, N.Y. (2.) Edwin C. French, born June 13, 1859 (Edwin married Jennie L. Sperry). (3.) Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" French, born Jan. 1864, married Frank J. Burgess, on Feb. 21, 1884 in Dryden, N.Y. They owned a dry goods store at 198 Front St. in Owego, New York. d. 1923, in Owego, N.Y. (4.) James Ryan French, born March, 1873 (James married May Louise Walkins). Cyrus and Nancy were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Dryden. Cyrus lived in Dryden, Tompkins County New York. d. June 4, 1894. Buried: Green Hills Cemetery, in Dryden, Tompkins County New York (Section 2, Lot 63). --------------------------- 9. Hannah C. French. b. Aug. 24, 1827, in Hague, Warren Co. New York. m. Nov. 1 (or 11), 1854 to Francis Willard Howe, the son of Frederick Howe Sr. and his wife Polly Bliss. d. Nov. 12, 1889 in Bertrand Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan (just three days after her sister Paulina died). Buried: Howe Cemetery. Note: The obituary for Hannah was published in the "Buchanan Record" newspaper on Nov. 14, 1889, page 3. ----------------------------------- 10. Jane French. b. July 27, 1829, in Hague, Warren Co. New York. m. Nov. 17, 1852, to F. N. Pratt. The 1880 census shows a "Willie Pratt" age 16, living with Jane's brother Samuel in Bertrand Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan. Could this be Jane's son? Jane was living in Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Michigan in 1889. ----------------------------------- 11. Mary MELISSA French. b. Nov. 2, 1831, in Hague, Warren Co. New York. m. Rev. James Harvey Darling (a Baptist Preacher), on March 26,1851, in New York, the son of Rev. Jacob Darling, and Mary Buffington. See: "Free Baptist Cyclopaedia, History and Biographical", by Gideon Albert Burgess and John T. Ward, page 149. They had 5 or 6 children, including daughter Clara, b. March 6, 1871, in Almena, Van Buren Co. Michigan. 1860 census: Paw Paw, Van Buren County Michigan. 1880 census: Almena, Van Buren County Michigan. They lived in Goblesville (Gobles), Michigan in 1892 (per Samuel's obit). d. Sept. 30, 1839, in Paw Paw, Van Buren County Michigan. Buried: Covey Hill Cemetery, in Van Buren County Michigan. "Melissa" is listed on James's headstone, along with his second wife Lovella E. Palmer. -------------------------------- 12. Mitla C. French. (Also listed as "Mitta", "Millie", "Mittie", and "Nettie") b. March 7, 1834, in Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York. m. Nov. 28, 1860 to David Fisk. (David was first married to Lucinda Platts. Mitla was his second wife). She lived in Cassopolis, MI in 1892 (per Samuel's obit). 1900 MI census: Millie Fisk, a widow, age 66, was living in Galien, Berrien County MI as a boarder, with the "Downing" family. In 1906, Millie, a widow, was living in Cassopolis, Cass County Michigan. d. 1912 (listed as "Mitla" Fisk in cemetery records). Buried: "Mitla" (French) Fisk is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan, (Section 20, lot 17). Also buried in lot 17 are her husband David Fisk (1815-1878), his 1st wife Lucinda (1819-1855), Benjamin F. Fisk (1840-1928), Alsena J. Fisk (1848-1851), Alexis Fisk (1854-1872) (the last three are children of David and his first wife Lucinda). ----------------------------------- 13. Darius L. French. (Incorrectly listed as "David" in the 1900 census). b. July 28, 1836, in Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York. m. Dec. 31, 1856 to Elsina W. Briggs (who was a tailoress, & born in New York Dec. of 1837). They had a hardware store in Cassopolis, Cass County Michigan. Children: Charles P., and Nellie M. (she married Mr. Moon). (Note: Darius' nephew Henry C. French was living with him in the 1870 census). 1860 MI census: Dowagic, Cass Co. MI 1870 MI census: Cassopolis, Cass Co. MI 1880 MI census: Cassopolis, Cass Co. MI 1892 in Cassopolis, MI (per Samuel's obit). 1900 Mi census: Lagrange, Cass Co. MI (Darius lived in Cassopolis, MI in 1906) 1910 MI census: LaGrange, Cass Co. MI (as a widower). d. Nov. 12, 1914, in Cassopolis, Cass County Michigan, at the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 14 days. Buried: Prospect Hill Cemetery, Cassopolis, Cass County Michigan. ---------------------------------- 14. James Edgar French. (Also listed as "Edgar J." in Samuel's obit). b. Sept. 02, 1838, in Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York. He was the 7th son and the 14th of 15 children in the family. m. Feb. 14, 1860 to Harriet Jane Parish (1838-1915) (who was born in Berrien Co. MI), the daughter of Archibald Parrish. (She was reared however, by Frederick Howe Sr. and his wife Polly (Bliss) Howe, of Bertrand Twp., Berrien Co. MI). Children: Mabel A. French (she married Frank W. Bosworth, and lived in Plymouth, Marshall County Indiana), and George Walter French, (1864-1939) an engineer who resided at home (in 1906) at age 42. He lived in Buchanan, MI in 1892. James became Supervisor of Buchanan Township, Berrien Co. Michigan in 1906. James was also a member of the Buchanan Village Council. James was for five years connected with the marble business in Buchanan, Michigan (The Buchanan Marble Works), in partnership with Joseph P. Beistle. James was a member of the Masonic lodge in Buchanan, Michigan. James cast his first presidential ballot for Abraham Lincoln. James took care of his parents until their demise. d. James died Jan. 6, 1913 at the age of 74 years, 5 months, and 4 days, in Berrien County Michigan. James E. and Harriet J. French are buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, in Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan (Section B, lot 34), next to their son George Walter French. Note: The obituary for James was published in the "Niles Daily Sun" newspaper on Jan. 7, 1913. ------------------------------- 15. Paulina French. (Listed as "Cara Pelina" French in 1850 census). b. Feb. 23, 1840, in Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York. m. No, she never married. (Living with brother Samuel in 1880 census, when she was age 40). d. Nov. 09, 1889, Berrien Co. MI (three days before her sister Hannah). Buried in the Howe Cemetery, as "Paulina" French.
