Description	:	Note: "A Twentieth Century History of Berrien County Michigan", on page 487, states the following: ------------ Titus T. French [Sr.] was born and reared in Vermont [near the Vermont border], and when a young man removed from the Green Mountain state to St. Lawrence County New York, where he was united in marriage to Miss Betsy [Betsey] Thayer, who was born in Mass. and reared in the place of her nativity to the age of fifteen years. At a later date, Mr. and Mrs. French removed to Onondaga [Co.] New York, and the year 1856 witnessed their arrival in Michigan, at which time they located in Buchanan Township, Berrien County... He was a substantial and trustworthy citizen, whose life was one of usefulness, activity and honor. He died at the age of seventy-eight in the faith of the Presbyterian church, in which he had been a deacon for more than fourty years and one of the most active and helpful members. His wife passed away when sixty-seven years of age. The surviving members of the family [in 1906] are: Mittie [Mitla & Millie] French, now widow of David Fisk and a resident of Cassopolis, [Cass Co.] MI., James Edgar French of Buchanan, MI [Supervisor of Buchanan Twp.], and Darius French of Cassopolis, [Cass Co.] MI. ------------------------------- Note: PLEASE, do NOT transfer this memorial to other web sites. Titus French [Sr.] married Elizabeth (nickname "Betsey") Thayer on March 11, 1810 in St. Lawrence County New York. ------------------------------- Note: At the time of their marriage, Titus was age 24 years, 9 months and 5 days, and Betsey was age 13 years, 9 months and 26 days. (Titus was almost 11 years older than Betsey). ---------------------------------- Note: "Spafford [Onondaga Co. N.Y.] Mortuary Records With Genealogical Notes", lists their daughter Elizabeth French, as the daughter of Titus and Elizabeth French.------- Note: "Betsey" was a common nickname for "Elizabeth". ------------------------------- Titus and Betsey had fifteen children, seven sons and eight daughters, thirteen of the children reaching adulthood. (They are listed under his wife Betsey French). --------------------------------- Sept. 1814. Titus French [Sr.] volunteered to fight in the Invasion of Plattsburgh in the War of 1812. He volunteered in at Hague, Warren Co. New York as a private in the 23rd Regiment of the New York Militia. ----------------------------- On March 14, 1816 Titus French [Sr.] and John Hayford Jr. purchase and mortgage a piece of land in the town of Hague, Warren Co. N. Y. They purchased 100 acres in Lot 72 of the "Robert McCallen & Others Patent", for $377.oo (per: Mortgages, Book A, page 495). Note: Three of Titus and Betsey's daughters were married to "Hayford's". --------------------------------- Spring, 1822: Titus French [Sr.] of Hague, Warren Co. N. Y. was elected as an officer of "Commissioner of Highways" (per: History of Warren County N.Y.). ----------------------------------- About 1833 or 1834 Titus French Sr. and his family moved from Hague, Warren County New York to Spafford, Onondaga County New York. ------------------------------ April 30, 1838: Titus French Sr. subscribes $3.oo towards building a meeting house of worship known as the "Spafford Union Society", which was formed on April 14, 1838. On May 7, 1838, his son Samuel French was listed as a trustee of the "Baptist Church Society" at Spafford Corners. This church was built in 1839, and dedicated Jan. 8, 1840. (Could these be for the same church?) -------------------------------- March 12, 1839: Titus French Sr. purchases property in the town of Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York on Lot # 90 for the sum of $1,575.oo from William Legg and his wife Amanda. ------------------------------------ Sept. 13, 1856: Titus French Sr. signs a Declaration in Spafford, New York requesting 160 acres of bounty land for fighting in the War of 1812. -------------------------------- Late 1856: Titus French Sr. moves his family from Spafford, Onondaga County New York, to (just West of the town of Buchanan), in Section 34 of Buchanan Township, Berrien County Michigan (possibly following his son Samuel French and his wife Sarah (Bliss), who came in 1854 and lived in Bertrand township, Berrien Co. MI, across the road from Sarah's sister Polly (Bliss) Howe and her husband Frederick Howe Sr. (who donated the land for this cemetery). ---------------------------------- Titus Sr. and his family were members of the Presbyterian Church of Buchanan. Titus Sr. served as a deacon for more than 40 years (per article in history book). ----------------------------------- d. Titus Sr. died Dec. 18, 1865 at the age of 80 years (per cemetery records and his obituary). (Actually 80 and 1/2 years). ----------------------------- Note: "A twentieth Century History of Berrien County Michigan", states that Titus Sr. died at seventy-eight years of age, which is incorrect. ------------------------------- Titus Sr. died at the home of his son Samuel French (per his obituary). --------------------------------- Note" "Onondaga's Centennial, Gleanings of a Century", by Dwight H. Bruce (1896), states on page 251:-------- Titus French [Sr.] came to Spafford, [in Onondaga Co. N. Y.], in an early day, and later settled in Buchanan, [Berrien Co.] Michigan, where he died. _____________________________________ 1810 N.
