His headstone says 1818 (?). -------------------------------- Samuel was married the first time on Jan 18, 1843 in Truxton, Cortland Co. New York, to Sarah E. Bliss, the daughter of Peter Bliss Sr. and his wife Mary "Molly" Perry. ------------------------------- Samuel and Sarah had seven children: four sons, and three daughters, two having died in infancy (listed under his wife Sarah E. French). ------------------------------- The 1850 census shows Samuel and Sarah's family living next door to the family of Samuel's sister Mercy and her husband Benjamin Hayford in Spafford, Onondaga County, New York. ---------------------------------- Samuel and his wife Sarah came from Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York to Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan in 1854. Samuel's parents and some of Samuel's siblings later came from Spafford, Onondaga Co. New York to Buchanan Twp., Berrien Co. Michigan in 1856. ----------------------------------- Samuel and Sarah purchased a farm of 155 acres across the road from Sarah's sister Polly (Bliss) Howe and her husband Frederick Howe Sr. (across the road from this cemetery on Buffalo Road, S. of Buchanan, in Bertrand Twp., Berrien Co. MI). Samuel added to this farm until at the time of his death he owned 367 acres of valuable land. ----------------------------------- Samuel's first wife Sarah E. Bliss died on Nov. 11, 1857, at the age of 46 years, 10 months and 20 days, near Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. ------------------------------------ After Sarah died on Nov. 11, 1857, Samuel was then married in 1858, to Mrs. Mercy J. Barnard - Wheadon, the daughter of Rufus Barnard, and his wife Submit "Mitty" Barnard. Mercy was the widow of George Wheadon, whom she had been married to for only four years when he died. --------------------------------- In 1870, Samuel French was appointed as the guardian for William Howe, the son of Frederick A. and Sarah Ann Howe. In 1870, Samuel French was also appointed as the guardian for Georgianna Wheadon/Wheaton. (Guardianship papers located at the Berrien County Historical Association). ----------------------------------- Samuel French was the Vice President of the "Buchanan Farmers Club", in Buchanan, Michigan (which was organized in July of 1870). ------------------------------ An article in the "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, Michigan, on June 25, 1874, states: "Mr. Samuel French is building a new house on his farm, to be occupied by his son Willard French". ------------------------------ The "Berrien County Record" newspaper, in Buchanan, Michigan on Thursday, May 10, 1877, reads as follows: -------------- SAMUEL FRENCH and Charles F. Howe have taken a prominent step toward the introduction of fine blooded cattle into this part of the county. They have purchased three fine animals in Detroit, a short time since, and now have them on their farms, about two miles south of this town. ------------------------------------ Samuel French was a trustee, and also a deacon (for 32 years), of the Presbyterian Church, in Buchanan, MI. ------------------------------------ Samuel is buried in the Howe Cemetery, in Bertrand Township, South of Buchanan, Berrien County Michigan. He shares a large headstone with his two wifes, Sarah and Mercy. The names of his two infant children are inscribed on one end of his monument. -------------------------------- Samuel's obituary was published in the following newspapers: --------- The "Buchanan Record" newspaper on Thursday, Feb. 11, 1892, page 2, column 2: --- Obituary. Died, at his residence two miles south of this village, in Bertrand township, Sunday, Feb. 7, 1892, at 1 p.m., after a brief illness of two weeks of paralysis, Mr. Samuel French, one of our early settlers, a very successful, enterprising farmer. Deceased was born in Hague, Warren county, N. Y., May 18, 1817. Was first married to Miss Sarah E. Bliss in 1848. To them seven children were born, four sons and three daughters, two having died in infancy. Three sons and two daughters survive him, Henry C. French, of Cassopolis, Mich.; Willard B. French and Charles H. French, residing on adjoining farms; Mrs. Sarah J. Morgan, of Mexico, N. Y.; Mary L. Forward, of Camilies, N. Y. After the death of his first wife, he was again married, in 1858, to Mrs. Mercy Wheadon, a very estimable woman, and much beloved wife and mother, who survives him. Mr. French with his family moved to Michigan in 1854, and purchased the large farm on which he resided until his death. Four brothers and two sisters are still living. Thayer, the oldest, resided with him; Cyrus, of Dayden, N. Y.; Darius, of Gobelsville [Gobles], Mich., and Mrs. Mitta Fisk, of Cassopolis, Mich. His two daughters, and one brother and sister, Cyrus and Mrs. Fisk, were unable to attend the funeral on account of sickness. The funeral took place February 10th, at 10 a.m., from the residence. The services were conducted by Rev. O. J. Roberts and Rev. W. W. Wells, pastor and late pastor of the Presbyterian church of this village, from the well chosen text, "At evening time it shall be light" -- 14:7 of Zachariah", of which deceased had been a faithful member and deacon for 32 years. He was well known as a gentle, kind and affectionate husband and father, a devoted Christian, a liberal supporter of the church, a kind neighbor, and will be greatly missed and kindly remembered by all of them. The funeral was largely attended. ---------------------------- The "Niles Daily Sun" on Monday, Feb. 8, 1892, page 4, column 2: --- Samuel French, an old and highly esteemed resident of Bertrand town- ship, died at his home on Saturday, last.
