Description	:	Burton Edward Piehl, 76, of Denver, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following complications of a cerebral hemorrhage. Burton was born on April 25, 1935, in Klinger, Iowa, the son of Edward and Martha (Tiedt) Piehl. Read More	Burton Edward Piehl, 76, of Denver, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following complications of a cerebral hemorrhage. Burton was born on April 25, 1935, in Klinger, Iowa, the son of Edward and Martha (Tiedt) Piehl. Burton was baptized on May 19, 1935, and confirmed on April 10, 1949, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Klinger. He attended rural school near Klinger, 5th to 8th grade at Klinger Lutheran School and graduated from the Readlyn High School in 1953. Burton worked for several area farmers while during his school years and following his graduation he attended Cedar Rapids Barber College from June 15, 1953 until he finished on December 18, 1953, and also worked at various jobs during that time. He worked in Readlyn the last part of 1953 and then worked for 3 months in the Vets Hospital in Iowa City in 1954. Burton then worked in Independence for 3 months and started in Waterloo late in 1954 until September of 1955. On September 8, 1955, he entered the U.S. Army where he served for 2 years, and was honorably discharged on September 6, 1957. He then went back to barbering in Waterloo and started his own barber shop in Denver (Piehls Barber Shop) on June 18, 1958, in the building that is now Generations and in 1971 moved to the building that Headlines is in. He married Jackie Farley in August of 1958 and was later divorced. On June 6, 1970, he was united in marriage to Lavonne Ruth Scharnhorst at St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas. The couple made their home in Denver, where Burton continued to own and operate his barber shop until late August of 2000 when he retired. Following his retirement, Burton worked part time for Schumacher Elevator in Denver and also continued to cut hair for his friends until his death. Lavonne died on October 2, 2004. Burton was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Denver, where he had served as president, vice president, deacon and treasurer and was on the Building Planning Committee from 1994-1995. He was also a member of the Acker-Matthias American Legion Post #653, and served for 30 years on the Denver Fire Department. He also served on the Senior Citizens Housing Steering Committee and board since 1973 until 1998, and was re-elected to the board in 2003. Served on the Scout Boards in Waterloo and Denver while his boys were active in scouting. Was in the Denver Community Club from 1958 until 2000. Was a charter member of the Denver Lions Club where he was a past president and was currently still a member. Member of the Bremer County Historical Board since 2001, and was president of AAL Branch 1181 for 6 years. Burton loved to take cruises, travel, trips to Branson, Missouri and Texas. Enjoyed fishing, working with wood, gardening and making candy and cookies, but most of all cherished his time spent with his family and friends. Burton is survived by his four sons, Gregg (Vicki) Piehl of Waverly, Iowa, Douglas (Coleen) Piehl of Spokane Valley, Washington, Bruce (Betty) Piehl of Houston, Texas, Russ (Melody) Piehl of Forest City, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Joyce (Alan) Schonbacher of Atkins, Iowa, one brother, Wayne (Shirley) Piehl of Bettendorf, Iowa; and his special friend, Janice Hughes of Waverly, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lavonne. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Denver, with Pastor Larry Feldt officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Denver, with military graveside rites conducted by the Acker-Matthias American Legion Post #653 of Denver. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 3rd from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver. Memorials may be directed to the family. Obituary supplied by James Tomlinson
